Did anyone here see Metcalf in Long Day's Journey?

After seeing this current production of LDJ and leaving the theatre rather unmoved by Lange's performance (I don't want to start an argument here -- just giving some context as to where I'm coming from), I stumbled upon Youtube clips of Laurie Metcalf and David Suchet in the London production a few years ago. Even though it was just clips from the show, I found Metcalf's take on the character to be utterly captivating and heartbreakingly honest. For better or for worse, she seems to be doing quite the opposite of Lange's portrayal.



Did anyone here manage to see this production and/or the full digital theatre recording? Is it worth renting the full recording on digital theatre?

I saw Metcalf in London, and have watched the filmed version through the Digital Theatre website. It's a shattering performance, and the film captures the enormity of Metcalf's accomplishment. It's absolutely worth renting. In addition, the entire London production was terrific, with great performances from David Suchet, Trevor White, and Kyle Stoller (whom I wish was playing Edmund on Broadway over JGJ). In just about every way I prefer it to the current production.

I saw the Metcalf production and was utterly captivated. Her physical transformation was astounding. The way she constantly moved her body/hands around without ever making it the focus of her performance was brilliant. I actually prefer Byrne to Suchet but he was every bit Metcalf's equal. The production as a whole was better than the current revival, and I think a lot of that had to do with cutting. The London production ran about 2:45. LONG DAY'S is a masterpiece...but there is some room for edits. The Metcalf production kept all of the emotional heft without the length.



That being said I did really enjoy the current revival. I found Lange transfixing in a completely different way than Metcalf. Hopefully Metcalf can do it on Broadway in the next 10-15 years.
