Did the balls come in a set with Lansbury and Seldes's faces on them?

I just remembered something. When Brantley reviewed the Broadway production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS a few years ago, something he said has since stuck out in my mind:
"Despite an ensemble featuring high-profile veterans of stage, film and television, sitting through STEEL MAGNOLIAS, which is set in a beauty parlor in a small town in Louisiana, is like watching nail polish dry."
I saw the production, and while I thought that Brantley was being a bit snide in that statement, I agreed that parts of the show were boring and that overall the production did not deliver the goods.
Now, if he can make a blatant statement like that about a starry production of a good ol' fashioned feel good show like STEEL MAGNOLIAS, it will be a test of his honesty as a journalist to see what he has to say about DEUCE -- a production ten times more dull than what took place on stage at the Lyceum in 2005.
That production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS had redeeming qualities. Lily Rabe made a charming Broadway debut as Annelle. Christine Ebersole gave a damn solid performance as M'Lynn, and Frances Sternhagen did a hell of a lot of what we all know she does best.
DEUCE has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, in my opinion. I hope that Brantley isn't softened by the fact that this is Angela Lansbury's big return and that he doesn't therefore give a middle ground, dishonest review. Brantley has had no qualms with being flat out honest in the past, and this case should be no different. I would see him as a total hypocrite if he doesn't give (at least what I saw in the state that I saw it last night) a flat out pan.

Re: Wanna Be a Foster's comment re: Brantley's review:
If the buzz is this bad (and I had friends who went and claimed that this was the worst performance they'd ever sat through bar none), I predict Brantley will give the show the ultimate snub and foist the review off on Isherwood. I notice he (or The Times editors) do that when they want to diss a show.

No, Rath, you are incorrect. I'm the one who advocates not posting personal information on the internet. That's what I've cautioned in the past, obviously to have it fall upon deaf ears. I realize that once it's out there, it's out there. What one babbles on about does have consquences. So excuse me if I chuckle at your self-victimization outrage over being stalked. You bring it upon yourself with all your prattle. So post as much as you want. Present as many "headline" items announcing your little productions and prominently displaying your name in them. Post in numerous threads about your little recitals or readings, but do not play the hypocrite card with me. You hold the Queen of Clubs in that deck, dear.
A prime example is your comment about this production. It's a production that cast two Broadway legends who have paid their dues. "I'll cut slack if the attendees tell me their ticket prices were lowered since the actors hadn't learned their lines and the audience didn't get a full performance." Well, I'll cut you the same slack when you too are capable of giving an audience a full performance or cut their ticket price. It cuts two ways.

Posted: 4/13/07 at 10:52amJennifer5 ... its really too bad that you paid full price for this. I know it sounded like an "event" when it was announced that Angela and Marion were doing a McNally play, but I saw the 2nd preview and it was really an awful show. Nothing happens. You don't care about the 2 ladies, the supporting cast is given the most idiotic dialogue and direction, and there is bascially no action in the show at all. Angela and Marion just sit there. I think it was at least 40 minutes before either one of them got up out of their chair, and that was just to walk around the chair, remove a jacket, and sit right back down again. SPOILER ALERT: As the show takes place during a tennis match, Angela and Marion are watching the "action", following the tennis ball right to left, left to right. But at times, Angela and Marion were looking in different directions!!!! And the prompter ... she might as well have been another character in the show. Truly a disappointing evening.

I am seeing it tomorrow night and looking forward to seeing what everyone's been talking about. I am a fan of both women and I hope it's gotten a little better than you all have said.
Question...the stage door is right down the street for it right?
And I enjoyed the video:P Celeste Holm is such a cutie.

See it tonight so will let you know tomorrow if we liked it or not
Mrs R got TDF but after some buzz about it she regrets it. I told her to give it a chance

Posted: 4/14/07 at 10:23amanybodyelse, the stage door is directly to the right as you exit the theatre. It's actually closer to the Imperial Theatre entrance than the Music Box. But the door says "Music Box Stage Entrance" right on it.
