Differences in Original and Revival of 42ND STREET

The title is pretty self explanatory...

The set was different. The original had no steps. It was a flat stage.

I believe the revival added one song. Was it "I Only Have Eyes for You"?

Saw both. I preferred the revival.

They also added: "Keep Young and Beautiful" and "Plenty of Money and You". Yes, "I Only Have Eyes for You" replaced "I Know Now".

Loved that staircase in the finale.

Did you like the new songs?

Personally I liked the new songs. Mary Testa was a hoot in "Keep Young and Beautiful".

"Plenty of Money and You" was great and gave Peggy a chance to really tap.

I thought the costumes in Dame (and final tableau for that number) in the original production were better than the ones used in the revival. I remember thinking, "wow" when I saw it for the first time.

I made my professional debut in a production of "42nd Street" almost 20 years ago. I remember when I saw the revival in 2001 the opening audition sequence brought tears to my eyes. It just brought back a flood of memories.

So, what was the reason for cutting I KNOW NOW. I love that song.

How was Ebersole?

Ebersole was great but it is a rather blah role... I also agree the original Dames costumes were stunning.

Christine Ebersole won a Tony Award for 42ND STREET, so that should speak for itself.

By the way...Beth Leavel was her understudy and went on quite a bit.

They cut "I Know Now" and replaced it with "I Only Have Eyes for You". I'm not sure why the switch, but it worked.

Christine Ebersole was fine. I saw Beth Leavel as well. I'm sorry I didn't get to see Beth when she was stand-by for Mary Testa, because I'm sure she was hysterical. Maggie Jones is a better fit for her than Dorothy Brock (though she was fine).

I've seen 4 different Peggy Sawyers (Kate Levering, Meredith Patterson and Shannon O'Bryan (u/s for Nadine Isseneger)) and Catherine Wreford on tour. Out of the four, I liked Meredith the best.

I saw it three weeks before she won the Tony and predicted correctly she would win.
She blew me away in that role. Made the most of her time onstage. Love her "I Only Have Eyes For You".

Does anyone know how Nadine was as Peggy? I went specifically to see her, but she was out the last time I saw it.

I would have voted for Marla Schaffel that year, but Ebersole was equally deserving and totally delicious in the role.

Dottie, I saw Nadine and thought she was really something special. I liked her quite a bit more than Levering.
