For once I'm drawing a blank when it comes to NYC dining! Some friends (ages 20s-50s) are coming into town and have asked where they should eat before seeing a show at the Public. Where are the best spots??
thank u

S’Mac or San Marzano are my two faves around there.
I love Indochine, and it’s directly across the street.

As a New Yorker, I’m happy to see someone else has already suggested Vic’s. Although I haven’t been back since 2020, it has always been one of my favorite restaurants, the food, service and ambiance are wonderful! Italian appetizers , pastas, pizza, entrees are encouraged for sharing. They also have great brunch options in case you need that in the future.
Fiaschetteria Pistoria is another wonderful Italian restaurant, I’ve been to their restaurant on the west side but they also have a location on East 11th.
For something casual, Foxface sandwich “window” is wonderful. Menus change daily with unique combinations. Since it’s a window, they don’t have indoor space but last time I was there they were sharing an outdoor space with a neighboring restaurant.
For locations a little further, but in the East Village/ABC area: Nowon (about 15 minute walk), and many others if you need more just ask. Also love LES and Soho options depending how close you want to be … enjoy dinner and the show!
I've eaten at Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ before a show. It's pretty fun when it's a group.
I second Vic's. Also, Lafayette is great if not a little pricey. Veselka is a nice Ukrainian restaurant a couple of blocks away.
And if all else fails, the Library restaurant at the Public is open.

i think Lafayette is way pricey for what you get. (though i have brought home the take-out desserts from their yummy bakery on more than one occasion (not recently).) Just my $0.02 -- it's wildly popular, so what do i know?!
for a real splurge try Il Buco on Bond; the food is sublime and the setting exudes warmth on a cold evening. or their (slightly) more moderately-priced Alimentaria around the corner on Great Jones.
