Okay this has been an uncertain topic for a while, but does anyone know for sure what the next disney production is going to be? I mean I've heard Little Mermaid, Tarzan, and now I just heard Snow White....I'm so confused! lol I know they are coming out with a show that's not based on one of their movies, it's something different, not too sure, but I heard it'll be okay.

CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG is first. TARZAN is next for 2005. They also want that Disney Musical Revue, MARY POPPINS, and LITTLE MERMAID afterwards.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is NOT a disney musical...they only produced the movie...Tarzan is first, then Mary Poppins followed by Mermaid, with Aladdin in the wings.

I was under the impression that it was Mary Poppins in London and the new On the Record "Disney Review" in Ameirca first.

Not that it matters, but Snow White is in Disneyland, not California Adventure. Aladdin is at California Adventure though.

On The Record already has it's pre-NYC run set in Cleveland at the Palace Theatre, Playhouse Square Center. There will be an 8 member cast. Here is the thread I made earlier...

Disney Theatrical Production's new show, "On The Record," a musical revue of 50 songs from Disney movies, will open in CLEVELAND, OH (sorry, some hometown excitement)!! It will leave town on November 21st and tour for about a year. During this time, producers will be decideing to make a NYC move. Here is the article

I can totally see them puling of some kind of discriminatory "pacific islander", Jamaican, rhythmic dance themed Little Mermaid schlock that will win Tonys for how "breathtakingly original" and "uncommonly fantastic" it will be, but personally I think Little Mermaid is a stupid idea. We've already gone that way with 'Once on this Island' and I don't see the need for Disney to do Little Mermaid. If they absolutely must do another Broadway show (which I'm totally against) but if they must I'd rather see something non-movie based like AIDA. Aida was their last Broadway show and it was original, so I don't understand what you mean. Writing off The Little Mermaid based on your own concept of how you think they will stage the production seems to be jumping the gun quite a bit. It has had a couple of readings, but far from being produced at the moment with any concept tied to it. The only shows definitely moving into production are Mary Poppins in London and On the Record for a US national tour. Tarzan is in the works, but is still in very premilinary stages. The Lion King faced a huge amount of skepticism before it ever opened, but then surprised everyone including the critics. It's possible that it could happen again.

yep me too. the less people producing broadway musicals the better, dammit. let's make sure that clear channel never does another one and that universal stops any plans for a tour of wicked or anything that might follow it up on the boards. in fact, let's stop anyone who we don't like from producing anything, yeah, that'll be great! in the meantime, oh catsnyrevival, will you be paying the bills for the thousands of people who will be put of work in nyc alone when you run these doggone awful producers out of the business?

Aida was an opera long before it was a musical. I don't call that original...

I just think that there are quite a few shows out there that are much more deserving of a Broadway staging than 'The Little Mermaid'. The producers can produce whatever the hell they want, that doesn't mean that I have to like it....

You all know I'm dying to see Tarzan... I won't beat a dead horse.

As for The Little Mermaid, MyNameInLights - I agree with what Musetta said (except it's Julie TAYMOR, not Taylor... not a big deal, though). She did the puppets for The Lion King.

Disney didn't have anything to do with the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was produced by Albert Broccoli for MGM. Broccoli, it should be mentioned, produced many of the James Bond films for MGM. (The original Bond books and Chitty share the same author, Ian Fleming.)

I too would rather have Disney to do something original and not based on their movies. The act is getting a little old. To bad disney can't use their "disney on broadway" company for new stories and plots.

they've produced three shows on broadway folks, the last of which was not based on a movie. while they are partners in mary poppins, they're in it halfsies with cameron mackintosh and that movie is 40 years old. the production of tarzan, if it stays true to what they began with, will be something new and interesting and different, as was lion king. mermaid's on a shelf. but to say their act is getting old after three shows, one an original work and one which took home 8 tonys including best musical, that's not even remotely sensible.

When I mentioned Aida was original, I meant as a musical produced for the stage rather than a musical based on one of their films. Much the same that Rent is an original musical, though it too, is based on an opera. I didn't think it would take so much explanation. A truly original musical that is not based on a movie, novel, historical event, play, or biography with an original score is extremely rare, but it has happened. Disney has provided two of Broadway's long-running musicals and I'm sure Aida (though I don't care for the show) will continue to run a while as well. Families worldwide have enjoyed the shows for years. I still don't understand how this is such a terrible thing.

More kiddie shows where the audience can come in already knowing the plot and most of the songs and won't have to think or really listen.

Where are the new plays? This generation doesn't have an Arthur Miller, Edward Albee, Tennessee Williams, Lanford Wilson, Steve Sondheim or even Neil Simon. Instead we get a constant barrage of crap based on movies that everyone already knows.

Broadway has indeed become pathetic.

I guess you forgot about Tony Kushner, Jason Robert Brown, Michael John LaChiusa, Richard Greenberg, August Wilson, Urinetown, Avenue Q, Movin' Out, Taboo, Caroline or Change, Bombay Dreams, Assassins and the fact that Edward Albee is still writing for the stage. How many "kiddie shows" (or more accurately, "child-friendly" shows) are currently on Broadway? Only two. It's not like there's some sort of kiddie-show domination going on. Even The Boy From Oz and Wicked are not based on films.

Where are the plays? Original plays? Do you mean:

Golda's Balcony
The Retreat From Moscow
Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks
The Violet Hour
Anna in the Tropics
The Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All
I Am My Own Wife
Drowning Crow

and upcoming:

Match
Sixteen Wounded
Sight Unseen

All of these plays are just from this season. They may or may not run long, just like the musicals, but you cannot say there has been a lack of original works opening on Broadway. Not to mention Off-Broadway. Broadway.....pathetic? I guess if you're not paying attention. Sounds a bit like bitterness unfounded.
