I have heard rumors that their next project is Tarzan. Still, you know they've had workshops of "The Little Mermaid" and we know they're doing "Mary Poppins" with Cameron Machintosh in London.
Does anybody know for certain what Disney's next project on Broadway will be? IMO "The Little Mermaid" has more broadway-sounding score, but I wonder how they'll pull off the "underwater" effect without making look too "theme park". I thik Kerry Butler would make a great Ariel. I'm also very suriouus about "Mary Poppins" and how they'll accomplish the special effects. Any thoughts?

Posted: 7/29/04 at 12:21pmI have always thought the Disney musical with the most theatrical possibilities is The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The score is awesome, the roles are great...not to mention all the characters are human...there are no mermaids or beasts or dancing spoons or flying carpets...it seems like the most obvious choice to me...

Posted: 7/29/04 at 12:28pmI agree with Hunchback. I love Menken, and I think of all the Disney Musicals this one has by far the best score. Plus, the lyricist is that unknown guy, Stephen Schwartz. Wouldn't know what else he's done...Lol

Posted: 7/29/04 at 12:29pmGood Point. I don't know why the German production of Diney's "Hunchback" never made it to Broadway. . .Did anyone here see the show?

For certain, the next Broadway project is TARZAN. Then LITTLE MERMAID. Chitty and Poppins are also coming, but those aren't solely Disney.
But first, Disney is touring ON THE RECORD.

Posted: 7/29/04 at 12:34pmI owuld love to see Hunchback on Broadwday. Sometimes when I get bored a noght and can't find anything to watch I'll put that in and just listen to the music....yes...I know I'm a loser.

Posted: 7/29/04 at 12:34pmAlso, I think Disney should get Julie Taymor to direct The Nightmare Before Christmas. And you can't be a loser if you have a picture of Barrett as your icon. :) Updated On: 7/29/04 at 12:34 PM

I just think it is probably not too different from the shows performed in front of Cinderella Castle . . . Also, I thought it wasn't very original that they pulled a Mamma Mia! on us and just sort of stuck the old classics together with a thin stroyline . . . thoughts?

When I go to Disney World, I am pleased with their shows. Especially FANTASMIC!.
I enjoy Abba music, but the show didn't do anything for me.
I enjoy Disney music, but we shall see.
They will probably have a bunch of effects and this show will be 100% spectacle.
I haven't seen it, but I will be seeing ON THE RECORD when it comes here next year.

Posted: 7/29/04 at 12:46pmHunchback opened in Berlin in 1999. I saw the production. The book and score were great (if you know German), but the staging was dull.

#15re: Disney on Broadway. . . What's next?
Posted: 7/29/04 at 2:46pmI think that Pocahontas is one of the weaker Disney efforts. The music is gorgeous, but the movie is sorely lacking. I don't think it could be turned into a 2+ hour stage show (the movie is about 80 minutes).

Posted: 7/29/04 at 2:49pmI might work if Stephen S. wrote some more songs, and Disney made the story line a lot better.
#17re: Disney on Broadway. . . What's next?
Posted: 7/29/04 at 2:52pmAlan Menkin wrote the score, with Stephen Schwartz doing lyrics. It is, by far, the best thing about the film. If there was severe tweaking to the story, I think the music might be enough to carry the show (with strong leads, of course).

Posted: 7/29/04 at 2:59pmI think with all the money Disney has they should look beyond transforming their movies into stage "specticals" on Broadway and look to producing more original works like AIDA. (hey, at least it wasn't a movie first...) The whole "Disney movie on stage" thing isn't working for me, and no way will I be going to see On The Record... yuck. I don't think anything will come of that... not on Broadway anyway...

The Disney Cruise Line has a show, HERCULES - THE MUSE-ICAL
Didn't work for me on stage. Yes, the Muses are a great touch in singing narration, Hades is a great villain, and storyline is generally good, but as a stage show, don't see it happening.
Better as a film.
I think LITTLE MERMAID is the best choice for a Disney film on stage.

Posted: 7/29/04 at 3:09pmI love Hercules! not too sure about it on stage though
#22re: Disney on Broadway. . . What's next?
Posted: 7/29/04 at 3:09pmI haven't seen "Mary Poppins" (has anyone been to London and checked it out?) but I adore the movie and I think it would make a charming, fun show. And I've been waiting for "The Little Mermaid" to hit the stage ever since I saw "Beauty and the Beast". I've loved that one ever since I was five. As for "On The Record"...I have no plans to see it. Is it just a series of Disney songs or does it attempt to integrate a plot like so many other shows have done with already existing music?

Posted: 7/29/04 at 3:10pmI know Prince of Egypt is Dreamworks and not Disney, but I think that'd make a pretty good musical.
