Disney on Broadway. . . What's next?

Posted: 7/29/04 at 3:20pmI remember laughing so hard at the lyrics in Prince of Egypt... lol. Shwartz really needs to find a good lyricist... before you say it... yes. I know he won an Academy Award, but till, some of those lyrics are shameless...

I agree with Anastasia having good theatrical potential. But it is Fox...not Disney

I think Hunchback has great potential. I also love the idea of Mulan, starring Lea Solonga as Mulan. I'm actually surprised that isn't in the works yet lol.
Toy Story (maybe a combo of the two films or a new story all together) might also be interesting, I don't know how the final product would be, tho.

Nightmare Before Christmas would make a freakin' fantastic musical! I always imagined it would be spectacular onstage.
There was another thread awhile ago that discussed Mulan as a possibility. I think Mulan would make a wonderful musical - it's one of Disney's stronger and more serious animated movies, and it has a great score. An Asian-influenced staging would be phenomenal. Plus, they can get Lea Salonga to do the title role (she sang it in the movie).

Not Diisney but they NEED to make ANASTASIA into a musical on stage.
and i know it has been talked to death before but why not
Newsies
and they could do a stage version of POLLY-- the show with Phylicia Rashad and Keisha Knight Pullam. I loved the music to that show. Audra McDonald in the role of the aunt....

From the press info. they've sent me, it seems ON THE RECORD is more of a "concert with a scripted theme" for lack of better words. Having not see it, of course it's impossible to know for sure.
The setting is in a mock recording studio, where a director must use all the Disney bells, whistles and fairy dust to create a musical recording to end all recordings. I was told, they are also auditioning for chorus in some touring cities using some local singers/dancers to add to the cast.
First plans are an extensive tour and if it's popular enough, it may move to NY. That seems to be the buzz about this so far.
I would think it will be popular family entertainment, if nothing more.
I'll get to cover it in Philly in Jan. at the Academy of Music. Hey, it's Disney for better or worse!

Posted: 7/31/04 at 1:32pm"On the Record" is coming to the National Theater in DC this season along with Mamma Mia for the millionth time. I might go- though I have hated BATB and Lion King on stage (liked Aida though).

HERCULES on the Disney Cruise Line was the worst of the four shows they offered. THE GOLDEN MICKEYS was better (and that is even a musical revue show like ON THE RECORD - with a plot thrown in for a story).
Speaking of ON THE RECORD - I'm told if you don't like Disney, then there is no other reason to see the show. Pure family entertainment, like the theme park shows. (DUH!)

This is from USA Today. I think this would be a great musical. If you haven't seen this documentary you must!
Stage
'Spellbound' the musical? Stay tuned
The celebrated film documentary Spellbound may soon be weaving its magic on Broadway. Disney is developing a musical version of the sleeper hit about kids competing in the National Spelling Bee, according to Thomas Schumacher, head of the company's theatrical division.
Schumacher says the stage version will present a new story founded on the basic structure of the documentary. "I love the idea of celebrating these kids who are gigantic heroes in their own little world, even though they're considered nerds. It's built around their journey, but it's also about their parents. You're dealing with people from different ethnic and economic backgrounds. There's no connection between being well-to-do and achievement."
There is a connection between Disney and Spellbound, as it happens: The film's director, Jeffrey Blitz, was a college roommate of company chief Michael Eisner's son. No production date has been set for the show.

Spellbound... do you think they will use kids for the parts? I want to audition for it!!! Hahah.
I agree with Mulan and Hunchback. Mulan moreso, just because I adore the movie.

Disney on Broadway. . . What's next?
Another overblown, overly commercial mess hogging up valuable theater space...
(pray it's not a musical version of "Hocus Pocus")
