Nor is Tinkerbell, but that fact doesn't stop them from merchandising the hell out of her. It's sad that they excluded Esmerelda becase, man, she was hot.

That being said, I don't think "Aladdin" will ever be able to be pulled off correctly. They shouldn't even make an effort, what with all the flying, magic, special effects, and all. Can't be done and ever match the film.

Uhhh, if there is one Disney movie that would be easy to pull off onstage is Aladdin, love. It can be done, believe me- it's like saying Peter Pan couldn't be done.

Yes! My brother played Aladdin for 7 months. He was very happy to have a stunt actor do all of his flying for him.

Esmerelda, Meg, and Alice kick all the princesses ...except Pocahontas, of course.

And I think you are right about the princess aspect, Justin.
Disney has a trillion ways to mix all their characters into new marketing ways - putting a group of "princesses" together has been going on for the past few years - I even remember the emphasis put in the videogame Kingdom Hearts about this.

So, it is very possible that they don't want more than one of the group on Broadway at a time.

1) ALADDIN can't be done on stage?? Too late. It already has been turned into a musical for their CA theme park. I heard it was a GREAT show.

I would have NEVER thought THE LION KING could be done on stage, and look how that turned out.

2) Yup, it's true. Tinker Bell for a very limited time was included in the Disney Princess lineup. They learned to market her as her own line, however. She's now the leader of a Disney Fairies lineup.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

...and Princess Eilonwy gets screwed over once again. Maybe her and Princess Kidagakash can have a pity party.

Hunchback would be brillant and beautiful on stage, too bad they've abandoned that idea.

And I don't get the "girl show" "boy show" idea. That doesn't make sense. I think Disney closed "Beast" because as they said in the article: it was past it's peak, they wanted to work with a theatre they knew, and every other theater is full. Makes sense to me. And the next Disney musical on stage is "The Man in the Ceiling" written by Lippa. I can't wait for that. I hope Disney starts to produce new material instead of the same ol' crap.

I agree, Hunchback would make a wonderful production. Alan Menken's choral work in that production is fabulous "The Bells of Notre Dame" and "Heaven's Light/Hell Fire" are my favorites. I can only imagine how those works would just fill up the theater....

Hunchback is my Disney movie guilty pleasure. I quite enjoyed the Disney park staged adaptation they did a million years ago. So while I am vehemently opposed to the "Disneyfication" of Broadway, as it were, I'd probably see that adaptation in a heartbeat.

No companies, even Disney, make such inane rules. It bears some truth--i'm sure they want to have all their shows targeting diff demos etc--but basically if they thought they could get away with having huge hits with 5 princess musicals, and outsell Lion king, etc--they would

I've always wanted to hear the new hunchback swongs in English--i was looking forward to the planned TV movie version. re: Disney's 'One Princess Only' Rule? It was pretty brave of Disney to hire James lapine to direct the German version as well

From MovieMusicals.net (relaunching February 3):

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME [LIMBO]

In May 2001, Variety reported that Sally Robinson was to pen a television musical adaptation with Jeff Bleckner directing. The project was to air on ABC’s THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY. Neil Meron and Craig Zadan’s Storyline Entertainment were to produce.

In January 2003, Bleckner announced filming was expected to begin in 2004.

In June 2003, Stephen Schwartz was quoted in saying "...Obviously, Wicked has been occupying most of my time, but I was able to get a new song written with Alan Menken for the planned television production of HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME -- no word yet on when that will be scheduled...." The new television project was reportedly to draw from both the Disney animated feature and the Berlin stage version - the tone expecting to fall somewhere in between the light-hearted movie and the darker Berlin tuner.

In March 2004, Jason Moore, who directed Avenue Q on Broadway, was announced to replace Bleckner as director. "We haven't found anyone since Rob Marshall we feel more strongly can make that transition (from stage to screen)," quoted Meron to Variety. "He's clever and fresh and inventive, and he knows his way around a musical. With Jason, hopefully lightning will strike twice."

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME was expected to air in 2005. For unknown reasons, however, the project never even made it to casting.

Disney could really save their imagine with Hunchback. I know their "public" imagine isn't that bad, but they could take a very artistic turn with Hunchback and win back the critics. If only they'd take a chance.

I would love to see Sleeping Beauty live on stage. Maleficent & the three fairies do some really awesome things in the animated movie, so itd probably be difficult... talking animals, a cake & dress that make themselves, and a witch that turns into a dragon. Tho if they keep the scene in Mermaid where Ursula gets about 50x larger and summons a storm and sinks a ship with her tentacles, then anythings possible.
