Well, surprise! I saw this movie last week through a advanced screening and loved every second of it! Phillipa doesn't sing, but Christopher Jackson is the singing voice of Moana's dad. Auli'i's voice is beautiful! Lin Manuel Miranda's songs are extremely special here.
Where You Are- The music reminds me a lot of "Flower of Gold" from the cruise musical for Tangled. The backup chorus reminds me of Lion King songs. Talks a lot about the village and Moana's role
How Far I'll Go-The movie version is way better than the credit version. Auld'l's voice is so beautiful, but pictured someone higher. The orchestrations are classic Disney mixed with Pacific music. The visuals are gorgeous.
We Know The Way-Skipped
How Far I'll Go (Reprise)-You can hear in a link I posted last night. But, it is so powerful and moving at the end. The scene reminds me of Mulan leaving a lot
You're Welcome-Very 90s Disney from the music to the visuals with bright colors and 2D animation. The rap is comparable to "Music Man" (We've Got Trouble)
Shiny-I do not have a real opinion because man, this threw off. Jermaine Clements talks-sings through Shiny with the chorus being R&S (rhythm and soul). It's really hard to understand what Jermaine is saying because he speaks very very low through the song. Look up the middle of Ruber's Song from Quest for Camelot to see what the tune is like. But, when Maui comes, that's when the song gets amazing. Very nasty and awesome visuals!
I Am Moana- Absolutely stunning. I can't really describe it because of spoilers. But, this is a song about the character of Moana and some beautiful chanting with another reprise of How Far I'll Go. The I AM MOANA belt is amazing.
Know Who You Are-Made me cry hard. It's the baby trailer music with only voices of kids are added in and Moana sings to *SPOILER* Moana's part is just like Eliza's part in "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story" in Hamilton. The slowness of animation makes it so powerful
We Know The Way (Reprise)-The version in the first trailer
The early reviews have been very positive with praise for Lin-Manuel Miranda's songs for being "memorable and tuneful". Just a few weeks left, can't wait!
I've been listening to the soundtrack all day, and it is so delightful! <3
All the songs are fantastic, though my only critique would be that some of them feel a bit short, both in the sense that I feel like they could be even more powerful if they had a little more time to let the music breath, and that I just wanted to hear more of them!
It's most noticeable in How Far I'll Go I think; there's one spot in particular, right after the first chorus, where it feels like there could be a really nice music break, but instead it goes straight into the next verse, and something about it just makes it feel rushed. We Know The Way, too, while it doesn't really feel rushed, it's just such a beautiful song and each time I hear it I just wish it didn't end so soon!
But yeah, when the biggest issue with a score is that I wish there was more of it, I'd say that's a job damn well done :)
I can't wait to see the movie!!
I don't need a life that's normal. That's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Something next to normal is what I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by.
Everything is actually up on youtube (DisneyMusicVEVO), so you can always check out the demos and outtakes to make sure you like them, but yep, I for one love them! Then again, even though it may not technically be the best, Lin's voice on demos is always really cute and endearing to me :) He's just so into it and animated!
"Unstoppable" and "More" are definitely my favorites of the outtakes, and More is sung beautifully by a Heights alum, Marcy Harriell!

So I saw this last night. Thought it was very cute and overall a good Disney movie. I was somewhat underwhelmed by the music though. Don't get me wrong I love Lin and I think Hamilton and ITH are both great shows with great scores. I just found the music here eh. I thought How Far I Go was catchy but it reminded me of several other pop ballads with similar melodies. I thought the other songs were just not great. I did think the choral work was excellent though. I thought there were a lot moments that should have been musicalized but they weren't. Like I thought expected some sort of bonding or fun duet between Maoi and Moana when they were on the boat. And while I Am Moana is a stunning vocal it's basically just a reprise of How Far I'll Go. I would have loved a separate 11 O''clock number for Moana. As I said I'm not a Lin hater and I did enjoy the movie overall. I just don't wanna get flack for not loving it as some on here do. I'd like to see it again to see if I feel any different
Quick question from somebody who has admittedly not read that much on the film (I'm seeing it later this week!): is there a definitive song in Moana a la "Let It Go," "A Whole New World," "Journey to the Past," et cetera? Just curious to know if there's a major belt number or an inevitably iconic song.
I'd say How Far I'll Go is the "iconic" song in this movie.

Saw it last night, not only is it better than the good but overrated Zootopia but managed to beat Frozen as my favorite movie of the new "Disney Revival Era". To answer you question BroadwayConcierge, the song Moana sings "How Far I Will Go" is her big song and has 2 reprises during the course of the movie.
This movie is worth seeing on the big screen and also worthy to see more than once.

Apparently the guy who wrote this movie also was the writer/director of Zootopia. It makes a lot of sense, because a lot of the same self-aware humor is in this movie.
Moana: I'm not a princess!
Maui: You wear a dress and have an animal sidekick. You're a princess.
Anyone know how the plot of the movie changed throughout the developmental process? I remember seeing some images from D23 that didn't end up in the film at all. Also on the album how come there isn't a How Far I'll Go demo?
