" You can't really "see" stomach abs support the back, which is all they apparently do."
I don't know how serious this thread actually is......but :
The abs are a main component in singing technique. They help your breath support when the muscles contract, and you will always hear a voice teacher saying "keep your ab muscles engaged!!!" They can also help your posture from not sinking over, and collapsing the upper part of your body, cutting off half of your sound/acoustical potential/breath. Last time I checked, singing is pretty important if you want to be on Broadway (for musicals at least).
So really, don't be so hard on the abs. They're a lot more useful than, say, your appendix?

Bruce Lee, my first crush.
Question for you physique experts out there. What do you call those little strips of muscle to the side of the chest, on top of the rib cage and close to the underarms?
I have always thought those fascinating. Boxer Manny Pacquiao has them, too.

They may not be NECESSARY, but they are appreciated.
I appreciated Joshua Henry's abs in Scottsboro Boys in many delightful ways. (The funny thing? As the show began, I actually thought--for a hot moment--that it was a shame NOT to see them again, having enjoyed them in AI earlier this year. Imagine my suprise when he took his shirt off! Yum.)
And why should the thread be deleted? It's silly but not offensive.

Posted: 10/31/10 at 9:50amNo, you don't need abs unless you're playing a part who has abs. In general, you have to be very fit to cope with a big role on Broadway, but abs are not necessery.
