I don't think Disney could get more theatrical than Hunchback of Notre Dame. That movie screams to be put on a stage.
My answer is no... I would have much rather seen Little Mermaid come to Broadway...
Little Mermaid is still in the works.
"This isn't a Good Vibrations/Caroline, or Change situation."
Plum, I realize the point you are making but why in the name of God would you ever put Good Vibrations remotely near to Caroline or Change in a post? *Sigh* Sorry, just bitter.

I don't really want one. There are so many other Disney movies that I'd rather see on stage, like The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocahontas, and just about anything else. I never liked Tarzan that much. It was okay. My favorite Disney movies are already on stage though.

Yes.
HEre's why I think it will be great:
Disney and Macintosh have the money and power to get the people and things they need for it to be phenomenal. I think the aerial effects will probably end up pretty awesome. Even though the music for the movie is just an underscore not sung by the characters, it is SUCH great music in my opinion. The story is fun, charcters interesting, funny, great opportunities for set and lighting and orchestrations (a lot of rythmic stuff)...I for one, am very excited about it and hope it will be a big hit.
I know, i'm in the minority on this...

If you are answering the question:
What is the worst/best show of the 2004-2005 seasons.
I'm sorry the characters from Tarzan are not characters that sing, I think the story works pretty well without the songs. Plus, why do we need another meaningless, crowd-pleasing, special effects loaded show? I thought that's why Phantom and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang were for.
I agree that we DON'T NEED a TARZAN musical, but I must say that I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I remember the movie being very good, with a great score. I know some people brought up the point that the characters didn't sing the songs in TARZAN opposed to other movies. Didn't that apply to FOOTLOOSE & SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER? They can be considered at least moderately successful. Also, when has Disney ever let Broadway down? I think with an expanded score and many opportunities for incredible sets and effects, this could turn out being a great night of entertainment and possibly a hot ticket. I'm not saying I have inside informantion (because I don't), but I can even picture Disney doing something like having Tarzan swing over the audience. That would be great. As for THE LITTLE MERMAID or ALADDIN instead. I would love to see them as well (especially ALADDIN), but now is the time for TARZAN, which I think has a good chance at surprising us all. Hopefully Ariel and Aladdin's day will come in the future.

I just don't understand why they're farming TARZAN now. You'd figure, they did Lion King and Beauty and the Beast because they were popular movies. Almost like everybody you know has seen them. Same with Mary Poppin. Little Mermaid and Aladdin. The fact that they're going to stage Mermaid and Aladdin makes perfect sense; both'll be a big draw.
But Tarzan, I don't know... I feel like it just didn't do that well in theatres, especially after having been released a couple of movies after Disney's 90s Golden Musicals age (Little Mermaid -> Lion King or so). Not quite as big a name. It feel like Disney would be better off doing a new musical than a musical based on a movie that wasn't all that popular.
What I heard from a friend who interned at Disney Theatrical is that post Lion King and Beauty, Disney is trying really hard to stay away from being the company that says "Hey, let's take a really popular cartoon we made and put it on the stage!" Hence Aida and the failed Hoop Dreams to an extent. But why the solution would be "Let's instead do a not very popular cartoon" just plain confuses me.
According to Box Office Guru.com, Tarzan had a worldwide gross of $447 million, which sounds substantial enough to me. Plus, the DVD was a huge seller. Tarzan has the recognition factor of the title, which will make it big with domestic and international tourists, and because of the animated film, it has a built-in family appeal (something that Aida did not have to its advantage). Like Beauty and the Beast, it has an Academy Award winning song ("You'll Be In My Heart") that was a huge pop hit. Then, factor in the creative team, particularly the superb Bob Crowley, and I think you have something that will be far more artistic than what those here are anticipating.
Whoever said that they wanted to find the CR of the Aladdin musical they have in Disneyland here is the link

I agree with you Magruder, somebody's buying the DVD's or there wouldn't be 'TARZAN AND JANE' and 'TARZAN II' also the Tarzan Cartoon is on several times every day! People will come! Also the TARZAN ROCKS! show took over where the Jungle Book show was at Walt Disney World and they fill the ampitheatre at each performance. They should have no trouble selling this. When you add it all up it makes sense to me and they can break new ground in ariel stunts and Scenic desing, costumes, lighting etc. Seems like a good investment to me! or at least not as risky an investment as most people on this board seem to think!
OK, Tarzan is simply going to be a very expensive show that's gonna steal a couple of "ohhhh" and "ahhh" from the audience because they will have people flying on stage, BIG DEAL! This show is soooo unnecessary! I believe Aida at least had some themes that were relevant and didn't rely on a popular title (unless you know about opera/classical music) to sell tickets. The whole Tarzan musical makes no sense whatsoever. Seriously, watch for Disney's Lilo & Stitch, the musical!

as if Disney needs more money. so in a word: no.
It seems the general concensus is no, which is interesting in itself. I thought it would have had more support here. I won't be putting it anywhere near the top of my 'shows to see' list on my next visit to NY.

I will! are you crazy??? say it with me: loincloth... very good.
catsnyrevival, you are easily pleased! Just between you and I, you know you can see a lot more for a lot less elsewhere, don't you?
That was a good one alterego, completely agree, we don't need Disney to satisfy our fantasies of naked men flying around.
yeah, but this is like high class porn, c'mon...
Hmmm, yes but I think I want more bang for my buck! 2 1/2 hours of a loincloth is more than enough!
Do we need a Tarzan musical-NO, do we want a Tarzan musical-NO
Why Tarzan? Why not Newsies, a movie that flopped because it was ahead of it's time and made up for it's loss of money with it's dvd sales-newsies is still one of the top 15 best selling disney dvds. And yes it work with an almost all kid cast since the characters can easily be played by early twentysomethings like they were originally in the movie. And trust me it would become a huge hit, look at Wicked, one of the reasons it was a hit was becuase the show related to teens, and newsies does indeed relate to teens and will bring in that teen market(Hell the movie already does have a HUGE cult following) Newsies is dying to become a Broadway musical and it has so much more potential than Tarzan.
Noooooo! Not another Disney musical...why Tarzan!?
I rather see a Mulan musical than Tarzan.
They should stop at Lion King.
