This has to be one of the dumbest ideas for a musical I've ever heard of (next to LENNON). Is there really much interest in this?
I don't think it's hit many sites other than ones focused on Broadway that only only people with an interest in theatre check... so we'll only be able to gage the reaction to it in the public sense when it really gets out there, and wheter we'll all eat our words, or laugh as they tear the set down, after it opens.
I love Disney musicals, but definately won't be seeing this one. I really don't think it's a good idea.

no. i say this for 2 reasons:
1. im unbelievably mad that its kicking out movin out, a poular show thats been running strong and selling more than enough tickets since day 1.
2. it just doesnt sound like itll go well. i mean what are they gonna do? have AHHHHHHHHHHHHH sung in 4 part harmony??

no I dont think Tarzan is a very good idea. Other movies would work better, I dont think this one will sell as well as BATB or The Lion King.
surely not. and with disney on bways expected growth, in the next five years we could see a broadway running The Lion King, Beauty and the beast, Tarzan, Marry Poppins, and Little Mermaid. Scary huh?
Plus i have to say the fact that tarzan needs a role of "narrator" or story teller or whatever only speaks to the fact that the music was never meant to form a narrative musical structure. It was background soft-pop for the movie! The characters didnt sing these songs. Ughhh, i just expect terrible things.
Of course we don't need a Tarzan musical, at least Little Mermaid was considered a breakthrough animated musical so it sort of makes sense that it is adapted for the stage but Tarzan? What's next Lilo & Stitch the musical?

Movin' Out had a long, healthy run and more than made its money back. This isn't a Good Vibrations/Caroline, or Change situation. And strictly speaking, do we really need any musical? What Broadway always needs is good shows, and no one here has any idea whether or not this one will qualify.

Not interested to see it at all.
But there seems to be a niche for Disney-type family entertainment musicals, if particularly well done.
Why Tarzan? There's so many better disney flicks to bring to broadway than Tarzan *cough* NEWSIES! *cough* -Sorry, I think I caught that fangirl flu again
I've got to agree. There are way better disney shows they could pick for broadway. Tarzan just doesn't make sense. It doesn't seem to have potential for anything really great plot wise, costume or set wise. I don't think its going to work...then again we won't know until its actually out.
The only thing Tarzan has going for it that I can think of is the male lead in a loin cloth throughout the performance lol, other than that what? "You'll be in my heart" is a good song but it gets old after hearing it more than twice and come on? Tarzan? It's laughable and anyways I can't see it being a sucess unless they get a hot six-pack lead with a killer voice lol

I don't think the question is NEED, cause in all honesty, do we NEED a musical with a book based around the songs of Abba? Or do we NEED an entire musical devoted to Cats? I mean, no, I think I could def. go on living if neither of these had happened, but I think Disney is going out on a limb with this choice. Its def. not one of their most popular shows, and frankly, ive never seen the movie because I hate Phil Collins music. However, I'm interested to see how this plays out. If this is successful, and I have no doubt it will be, unless it just gets horrible reviews, I wonder what Disney will do? Disney should build their own theater district or something to house thier own musicals. I've never seen the movie, but I'd go see this. I think its weird for ppl to have an interest or love for theater, yet won't go see a show becasue "they don't think they'll like it." Give it a chance, you might actually enjoy it.
While I would have rather seen Disney mount their "Hunchback of Notre Dame" on Broadway before they start resorting to things like "Tarzan" I am interested in how they plan to achieve it and that curiosity alone combined with a guy in a loincloth and "You'll Be in My Heart" will be enough to get me to buy a ticket...

Yeah, I agree CatsNY about the whole curiousity factor. To me, some of the other musicals that they could have picked (Hunchback withstanding because I would have loved to see that happen, although I dont think its popular enough), seemed to safe a choice and too predictable.

I think they should put a hault on Tarzan and continue with Mermaid.
Tarzan wasn't even a very popular Disney movie, was it? I certainly never saw it. I think a Disney version of Aladdin would be nice.
I'm actually looking quite forward to it.
As we know with all other successful Disney Broadway musicals, it promises not to disappoint as far as stunning effects, props, costuming, sets, and orchestration is concerned. I'd be very interested to see it just for those aspects. Disney, is afterall, the genius behind much of American popular culture and magic.

Yeah, I mean i don't expect Disney to do a stripped down version of tarzan. It would be the price of admission for the technical aspects of the show. I'm just curious to see how they work with the music and acting and whatnot. Having a show where the title character doesnt really sing is going to be difficult.
no we don't ...we do need to get rid of "Movin' Out" though.
Good, so it's not just me that thinks it's not wanted.
rentboy86 perhaps I should have called this thread 'do we want a TARZAN musical'.

I think they should just get on with 'The Little Mermaid'. I really want to see how they'll handle that one: like, lol, flood the theatre with water LOLOL. Have everyone take swimming lessons before thye see the show to get the full effect. Imagine the nightmares with Equity.
Re: Aladdin. I heard Disney have found a playwright to work on a stage version of the show for 2009 or 2010.. or something like that: but I'm not 100% percent sure
Just give us Mermaid. The only reason people are gonna like Tarzan is so they can perv at his physique

I am keeping an open mind about Tarzan. Disney has a particular commercial way of producing shows for Broadway and there is certainly
an audience for what they do. The combination of Phil Collins' music and the wizardry of De La Guarda's flying could make this something
to enjoy. Maybe it won't be the best musical but it could be a fun show to take your family to. As a mother, I am always trying to find theater that will appeal to my teenage son. Tarzan sounds like it might be one of the rare musicals that my son would want to go to see.
WOW so much negativity for a show that isn't even on its feet yet, what is this LENNON?
Although we may not need TARZAN it will be interesting to see how they acheive it! I am very interested that they worked with the DE LA GUARDA company on the stunts.
TARZAN was a popular Disney movie, yeah maybe not as popular as some but it did quite well at the Box Office and sold a lot more Soundtracks than some others.
Disney also revolutionized Animation at this time to be able to do TARZAN's "Tree Surfing" That's seems like a breakthrough to me!
I wouldn't worry about it outshining THE LITTLE MERMAID. I mean we've all read the articles, its in the works. It'll get to broadway!
As for the poster, It's one of the best on broadway currently. Simple Green makes it stand out. One simple logo that anyone around the world will know what it is without even reading the poster. From a marketing standpoint its better than the producers current poster with all the cast and Tony's on it. I mean I see that and I'm wondering what that flyer is about is someone liquidating??
I just think we all need to Calm down here. Even though everyone is entitled to their opinion I don't think negativity is what Broadway NEEDS right now.

Of all the Disney movies they could turn into musicals, I am not at all sure why the chose Tarzan. There are probably 10-15 movies that I think would transition better to the stage and are more popular in general.
