I'm not gonna go see this (just because I'm trying to see more shows for "teens" than "kids" because i cant get to NYC that often, and I wanna see the things I REALLY wanna see), but I think the sets and stuff will be intersting with the whole jungle theme...it'll prob at least win a set tony or something, i dunno!

Posted: 9/3/05 at 12:35pmThere is an actual Aladdin musical btw. Only Disney has it staged at Disneyland's California Adventure. I got the souvernir book and everything. Theres a soundtrack and merchanise too. It actually has a big budget and was very well staged and acted. Even better, it is FREE with admission. Alas, it was only 50 mins. I could easily see them transferring it to BW if the time was right. As of now, they show it 4 times a day at every Disneyland and people love it.

Posted: 9/4/05 at 2:45amThe only reason why Tarzan was turned into a musical is because it adapts easily to the stage. Trust me when I tell you this will be a cheesy fluff peice that can't hold a candle to The Lion King. It just a way for Disney to make sopme money while they are really working hard on The Little Mermaid which will be great as The Lion King.

TARZAN would be awesome to design. That's the only reason I'd want to see it.. to see costumes and the set. Plus I loved the novel growing up. (It's terribly different than the cartoon.)
Ah.. to see Lord Gray personified. GREATNESS!

OK I agree Tarzan was not the best. I always say "where did the Disney musical go?"
However, I remember people thinking "How are they going to make The Lion King into a Broadway show?" But look how that turned out. Who would have ever seen that coming the mask, the puppetry?
Now Disney will do it again. They will have a major name behind it, Phil Collins. Just like the others. I do believe that it should have been Aladdin or Mermaid or something but we have to live with Tarzan and after seeing what they did with it in a 30 minute show in WDW they should really do it on Broadway.
One more thing, someone mention Hunchback, it is a stage show in Germany. It was Disney's first exclusive foreign release. I would love to get hold of the CD but I could not understand a word.

Posted: 9/8/05 at 1:02amI'm looking forward to Disney's Tarzan. Being a Phil Collins fan I have confidence that he will create a great score. I don't understand why so many people in the theater community are against Disney. I think many in the community do not realize the contribution Disney has made to Broadway. Many young children get their first taste of musicals from Disney movies. This contribution has helped to keep the genre alive.

Posted: 9/8/05 at 1:54amNo! We need a Mulan musical, or a Pocahontas musical... Or maybe they should make an Aida movie, and go back to the beautiful Musical animated pictures! (With the voices of Heather and Adam, of course)

Yeah, why doesn't Disney spend its time working on a new movie musical because we all miss them so much! Instead of just remaking their old one's with crappy inworthy sequels. I'm ready for something totally original from Disney in the form of a musical back on the big screen!
As for this thread, I nearly shot my self when I heard Disney was doing another Bwy musical. I definitely agree, they need to just build their own theatre for their shows!

Posted: 9/8/05 at 3:20pmThe TARZAN film was actually one of the last Disney traditionally-animated films to do well at the box office. And, its actually a good film (good characters, action, energetic songs, good message, beautiful backgrounds). Sure I could do without the lame Disney side-kicks, but it was a strong movie with an interesting score by Collins/Mancina. I think we should expect something a little different with this show. Bob Crowley is designing/directing and it should be very environmental. Collins loves percussion, so that should be a strong part of the score. Combined with a hot loin-clad lead and aerial effects - I think this bears some attention (Disney or not).

Posted: 9/8/05 at 3:26pmDisney really needs to stop. All of its musicals on stage are horrible, bland, and boring. The sets for beauty and the Beast are embarassing, and The Lion King is not visually stunning. I find it colorless and unoriginal. Aida has some of the worst music ever composed, and its staging was lackluster, and choreography sloppy. There are only two musicals that I think would work really well: Aladdin and Newsies. If done correctly I think they can work. Disney needs to stop building theme parks on stage. Those shows would work better with a minimalist mentality. I think The Little Mermaid is probably the dumbest idea since The Lion King.

I'd rather see Aladdin than Tarzan.
Never a huge fan of the music. MAYBE that will change after seeing the musical - but I was bored by the music.

No we don't need Tarzan musical.
The story isn't anything so special it should be turned into a stage show and, honestly, Phil Collins' score was one of the worst Disney scores ever!
