With just hours to go before her big Broadway debut, I've been thinking... will this be a one-time shot for Christina Applegate, or do you think she'll make a return to Broadway in another vehicle? A revival or original piece?
She's a hard worker and looks great on stage- If she wants to come back, she probably will.

I hope she doesn't sell her soul to the Weisslers and go to "Chicago" next...ugh.

I agree, Princeton. However, if you think about it, Roxie is the perfect role for stunt casting...
Christina as Roxie, Neve as Velma, Lucci as Mama Morton.
The show will just keep running.
The question is: Does she want to have a future on Broadway? I doubt it. From all the interviews I’ve seen with her, I got the sense that her dream has always been to be in a Broadway show and NOT to have a career on Broadway.
If you've seen Sweet Charity, you know that Christina is 100% committed to the show and to doing the best work she possibly can, and as those are ideals that I'm sure directors want in every actor, she'll have a future on Broadway if she wants it.
Exactly...if she wants it.

I hope she does a good job witht he show and I hope she gets reviews that are good to her. But I still have that ache in my soul that thinks Jenna Elfman was born for this role. Someone get it to her before she gets too old.

Eh...Jenna Elfman... I never really understood the casting attempts for her in Nine or Sweet Charity. She gives off a very confident presence on screen, at least what I saw of her in Townies, Dharma and Greg, and EdTV, lacks the vulnerability of Charity and she's more annoyingly likeable than sweetly endearing. And I never thought of her as the sexpot that Carla needed to be in Nine.
On the other hand, I really think Marisa Tomei would have been the only other stunt choice mentioned for Charity. She plays vulnerable SO well, she's so cute, and she can really do comedy. I wonder what her singing/dancing skills are, if they exist at all...
But anyways, I think Christina's great in her own right, for sure.
I kinda don't like the idea of calling Christina "stunt casting" because she did audition for the role. And she did beat out Marissa Tomei, Jane Krakowski, and Jenna Elfman, right, I mean if she didn't why aren't they doing this role? Anyways, when I think of "stunt casting" I think of someone taking over a role and not originating a role, even if they're originating a revival. Anyways, I hope she doesn't leave the show her first chance after the Tony Awards like a lot do.
Also, and I haven't seen her do anything yet, but since she has enough talent and the name to boot she probably could have a broadway career. My question is "Does she want one??????"

Marissa Tomei, Jane Krakowski
what have those two been in , like movies and tv wise? anyone have a picture of them that they can post? i knwo the names but not the faces.
Marissa Tomei......Think of Anger Management, In the Bedroom, and her Oscar winning My Cousin Vinny
and most recently Alfie, which Jane Krakowski was in too!!!!!!
Jane Krakowski won a Tony for Nine and was also in Grand Hotel. She's fantastic, and would have made a better Charity than Christina.
I could see her in Chicago as Roxie. Couldn't be worse than Melanie Griffith. She's still too young, though.
Marissa Tomei should be in Little Shop, if she can sing well enough.
my heart aches to think of Jane as Charity.
i think she would have been so phenonenal. i LOVE her so much and i think that it would have been a great part for her. sigh...
as far as christina goes, we'll see what the future holds and how the rest of the charity experience goes for her and if it makes her want to return to the great white way or will scare her away...

at risk of sounding simple here.... is Neve Campbell signed to play Velma?
Jane is a great singer/dancer/actress who also seems to have a good mind for taking and refusing roles.
I cannot see Jan Krakowski coming across as vunerable, therefore, I don't think she would have been able to pull of the character of Charity. The dancing and singing, yes. But not the character.

Apparently, Jenna Elfman is not playing the role because she couldn't sing it, and Jane Krakowski is not playing the role because she reportedly got into a tiff with Neil Simon during a reading. Personally I think Jane would have made a terrific Charity.
I'm not sure why Marisa dropped out of the show. But I don't think you can really say that Christina beat them out during the audition process...
Neil Simon?????? I thought he was dead......

Neil Simon is very much alive, and did a lot of rewrites of the book (which he wrote originally) for this revival.
Yes - Christina is definetly not stunt casting for Charity. She definetly did audition for this role - she won the Weissler's over - and she got the role. I read Marisa just wasn't what they were looking for. and Jane definetly did get into a fight with Neil Simon - which wasn't a very smart thing.
I can definetly see her as Roxie in Chicago. I don't think she is too young. A lot of Roxies are played by women in their 30's.
The director and producers were very clear in every interview that Christina Applegate was the one they CHOSE after auditioning several lead ladies for Charity (Jane/Marisa/Elfman/many others we will never know about) They felt she nailed all three areas of the part, and the others didn't.

I do think she'd make a better Roxie than a Charity, but she probably wouldn't want to be the umpteenth replacement at this point.

Jane said she wouldn't play the role unless Neil Simon rewrote the script to make Charity "less of a doormat".
Neil said, fine - don't play the role.
