Umm, read this please:
Play (noun): the stage representation of an action or story
Musicals are plays, plays that use music and song to enhance the action or story. Technically musicals are plays, but mostly are just referred to as musicals. Read the dictionary, it is a great book.
I just saw a great play the other night, called THE PRODUCERS, it was a great stage representation of an action...

Looking at some of my old books which I had forgotten, I just rediscovered a lost treasure from many years ago.
It was a book published by Random House called "SIX PLAYS By RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN". The first one ( actually a script) is called OKLAHOMA!, the quintessential American musical
I guess musicals are technically plays, of a different category.

Posted: 1/29/05 at 6:03pmmusicals are plays... it's like squares are rectangles... even though they have more specific qualities, there is still an over-arching umbrella definition... musicals are plays.

Its also "spelled" not "spelt"
Anyway, a musical is a type of play. Not all plays are musicals but all musicals are plays. Its like saying RED is a COLOR, but not all COLORS are RED. :)

Posted: 1/29/05 at 7:19pmI think apdarcey was right: musicals are plays, like squares are rectangles. However, plays are necessarily not musicals, and rectangles are not necessarily squares. See?

Posted: 1/29/05 at 7:56pmA musical is definitely a play. It just happens to be accompanied by music. So it doesn't bother me.

Posted: 1/29/05 at 8:05pmA musical is always a play. But a play is not always a musical.

Posted: 1/29/05 at 8:11pmThe problem with calling it a musical is that a musical could be a stage musical or a movie. I usually say something onstage is a play, musical or not; because if someone where to ask me what Avenue Q was, I would say a play, because if I where to say it was a musical, that person could think I meant a movie. So, along with what everyone else said, thats my stance on the whole thing.

I can't say it bothers me, but I'll def. refer to Broadway plays as plays and Broadway musicals at musicals.
I have yet to call a musical a play. NO reason to really, but yeah
#23re: Does anyone elce find it annoying when....
Posted: 1/29/05 at 8:27pmSee THAT doesn't bother me. What does is the whole Soundtrack/Cast Recording thing.

Posted: 1/29/05 at 9:41pmWow, I must be more anal than I thought. I get annoyed at both play/musical AND soundtrack/cast recording. It just seems easier to call straight plays plays and musicals musicals. That way if you say, "I saw a play this weekend," the person would know automatically you meant a straight play and not a musical.
