If you wanted to watch it live, it is available streaming on CBS All Access. Just an option...

good to know although I refuse to pay for CBS live access.
we are actually going to be in NYC this year that weekend watching shows. Strangely enough Sweeney Todd is playing the same time as the Tony's
I mean, I live in NYC and have seen zero advertisements and didn't even realize I had bought a ticket for the My Fair Lady the Tuesday after the TONYS. So I'm excited.
Unless they figure out a way to have the cast of Hamilton perform again, it's going to be terribly rated. I don't think they have to worry about basketball being in the way, but here's a short list of what's on that night - of which many share a similar audience that watches the Tonys, so I'm sure will draw eyeballs away at some point:
celebrity family feud: the kardashians vs the west family [5th season premiere]
sunday night baseball: new york yankees at new york mets
$100,000 pyramid [3rd season premiere]
claws [2nd season premiere]
food network star: are you a main attraction? [14th season premiere]

In addition to the events everythingtaboo mentions, there's also always a chance that a game in the Stanley Cup Finals could be on the same night, as you never know until right then as series can vary wildly. I know a Stanley Cup final was on during last year's Tonys.
Also not on Television (but people watch them on streaming online), but, just as with last year, the Tony Awards are also the same night as one of the press conference nights of E3 (The Electronics Entertainment Expo), which is the video game industry's big week for announcements. Microsoft is having their press conference the afternoon before the Tonys, while Bethesda Games is holding their press conference during the Tonys. Not sure how much crossover there is between Theater fans and Video Game fans, but hey I'm one of them, and to be fair don't know the crossover between theater fans and sports fans either.

But this year's Tonys will be featuring Harry Potter, Mean Girls, Frozen, Spongebob and Bruce Springsteen. That's enough to draw more people in than some of the prior telecasts. Don't get me wrong, it's certainly going to have very low ratings just like we've seen in recent years, but I don't think this will be the one that's the lowest rated of the past decade.

Not really. But that said, this is one of the least exciting seasons in recent memory, at least for me. Pre-DVR I feel like I was usually busy on nights with a good slate of shows I was excited to see perform and maybe win and I happened to be free when I wasn't that excited to watch the show.
I'm curious about how Sara and Josh will be. I love them both and he has some hosting experience but I have no idea what their bits will be like. Two hosts makes me think of Alan/Kristin and Anne Hathaway/James Franco. My favorite parts (from the hosts, not the performers from the shows) are always the comedy songs, the more inside jokes the better.

Isn't this a larger issue than the Tony's, namely that so many people are "cutting the cord"? I wonder if ratings mean as much today. I'm sure they're still looked at, but with so many other options to see shows later and on demand, I'd think it's hard to gage viewership. I read an article about a year ago citing how many people, younger Millennials in particular, don't even own TVs. (Though I'm not a young Millennial, far from it, I haven't had a TV for years.) Gone are the days when every household had to have a TV front and center in their living rooms. If you want to see major sporting events it's easy enough to find a sports bar.
I guess I'm the wrong demographic anyway for the Tony broadcast. While I love theater, award shows are so subjective and I can't stand listening to thank you speeches. All I want to see are the performances, and I'm happy to wait a day or two to see them on YouTube.
I do listen to the SiriusXM live broadcast that evening. I like Christine Pedi's commentary though I'd like to be able to put Julie James on mute when she trips over herself to fawn over the actors.

I said before I don't plan to watch this year's Tonys but now I am to see if Spongebob is worth the 12 nominations
