According to IMDB:
Dot's singing in "We Do Not Belong Together", was dubbed over because she was so overcome with emotion when singing that it was deemed necessary to replace the original performance.
Has the original audio ever been released? Anyone have it? I can't believe they dubbed her. Her emotions looked so raw on film, it's sad that the audio isn't the same as what's on film. That song is the best break-up song ever written for Musical theater.
I can't believe they dubbed her.
She wasn't "dubbed". Bernadette Peters did the "dubbing" herself. She simply overdubbed new vocals for that section. Most likely Sondheim was unhappy that the lyrics couldn't be understood so he requested she redo the vocals.
This practice is common in all these "live" recordings to fix sound issues, lyrical mistakes, etc. Also, several performances are filmed then edited as a single performance so none of these 'live' recordings are indeed one single 'live' performance filmed.
IMDB used the term "dubbing". And of course she did the dubbing, but it says she was so overcome with emotion...... i'd love to hear her original emotion. So that's why I asked if anyone knew if it was ever released.
No. The audio was never released nor has ever surfaced anywhere. Its quite obvious it was erased during post-production or it would have found its way into the hands of many in the past decades.
Thanks for the picture.
"Overcome with emotion," my Aunt Fanny. She was in terrible voice during the taping, having sung herself raw in Song and Dance. Much more was dubbed than just "We Do Not Belong Together." (BTW, this was all rather open knowledge at the time.)
You saw her live and she was in bad voice?
I was not there, no, but many friends were. I saw her in S&D the week before, and she was ragged.
Well the score is no walk in the park I guess. She sounds incredible on the cast recording.
She was incredible in the show as well, a truly magnificent performance. Mary Ann Plunkett was a bit better (I thought) as Marie, but no one has ever been as good as her as Dot.
I saw her right after opening and she was in amazing voice. I think Song and Dance had just really taken a toll on her voice (since ALW cannot write scores that are possible to sing 8 times a week). She was in the middle of Song and Dance when she stepped in to do the Sunday recording, so she was just suffering from major vocal fatigue.
I wasn't able to catch Anneleigh Ashford or Jenna Russel so I don't know who is the best Dot but I've always thought Bernadette brings so much genuine emotion to every role she plays.

She is truly amazing. We desperately need a cohort of young, exciting divas to replace the aging stars. Unfortunately, almost none of them have the personality and unique vocal timbre that the greats do. Is Sutton Foster, Laura Osnes et al. the best we can do?

I think Phillipa Soo is very unique in her talent and will prove to be a major star. She's was only 24 when she starred in Hamilton. I think she will have staying power if there are roles that really show her talent off. Plus she is Chinese and Broadway is in desperate need of Asian diversity on Broadway.

Wow! I mean, wow! Both her parents were born in United States. Her father is of Chinese heritage. Her mom is of European heritage. Phillipa Soo is NOT Chinese. Wow!
Her Dad is Chinese american and her mother is European. She identifies as Asian american and has said in COUNTLESS interviews that she uses the term Chinese american and Asian american to describe her background. Take your wows somewhere else.
Here’s a recording of the song from a Soundboad before Song and Dance:

She is in great voice and sings with gorgeous emotion, just like the recording, which is one of the greatest aural records of a musical ever. Her voice was never the same after Song and Dance. She has a habit of disguising her detoriating vocal ability with tears or “crying” - and I say this as a huge fan and very vocal supporter of her Sally in Follies. If you see her on a good day, she is transcendent. If she’s not well vocally, you will get a tearful performance (look at the video records of “Losing My Mind” to see what I’m saying.

Thank you for the clarification, Ricardo.

You're my hero. Damn that sounded amazing. She sounded like her heart was really breaking. SUNDAY is ( my opinion) one of the best shows ever created for the stage.
