"my tsunami comment was not meant to make a stir or make a horrible event seem unworthy of attention or concern!!....my comment had to do with the way america handled it...."
You have to be kidding me. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DIED. Just because it didn't happen here doesn't mean it is less important.

I don't think America made a big enough deal out of it. I don't see anyone worrying today about how the people in that part of the world are coping. Sure we got a blurb today because there was an aftershock, but the tragedy fell from the media's eye just as soon as things weren't nearly as gruesome and panicky. Things still aren't good and countries haven't delivered their promised relief packages yet and may never deliver it in full. It makes me sick to think that for how long September 11th was a top story in the news, but the death of over more than 100,000 people didn't stay a top news story very long. Granted they are very different circumstances, but like I've said before, I have come to believe our society is too cynical and really doesn't care about the rest of the world as much as it would like to claim it does. And that will be our downfall in my humble opinion. (Sorry for adding another rant.)

Posted: 3/31/05 at 12:20pmthe thing about this argument is that i agree with you guys!! i agree that america's govt and general society only thinks of itself and that could be its downfall.....the way the world is today, we get information about events across the world in a matter of seconds!!! and natural (and manmade) disasters are happening everywhere!!! All the time!....and compared to past natural disasters the tsunami was on the smaller side..(in no way am i talking it down..im just puttin it into a wider perspective)..therefore i think its rather telling how the US govt and US celebrities jumped on it to sell themselves as good samaritans....so my flippant comment towards the tsunami was not about the event itself........that was my only point.......now tell me how dumb i am one more time please.....but i dont really care.....i just dont want to be misunderstood! sorry to change the subject from jhill once again........my original point was that jhill is brilliant!!! hillarious! one of my best friends! i'll defend him to the ground! and those of you who dont get it are missing out!

Ah, I'm sorry, but I'll have to threadjack again. I too disliked the whole chest-beating 'look-how-much-money-we're-pledging' spectacle the governments put up (especially since you never know how much of the pledged aid will actually be delivered, based on past records). And I wish other humanitarian issues don't go unnoticed in the press, because I hate that things have to be sensational to get coverage. However.
and natural (and manmade) disasters are happening everywhere!!! All the time!....and compared to past natural disasters the tsunami was on the smaller side...
I don't know how far back into pre-historic times you were going in order to 'bring this into a wider perspective', but in terms of natural disasters in modern history, the 2004 tsunami is one of the deadliest. In terms of the earthquake, the latest reading for it was 9.3, which means the only bigger one in scale to have happened since 1900 was in Chile in 1960. As for the tsunami: it was the worst in recorded history; prior to the December one, the deadliest recorded had been the one in Japan that happened in 1700s. In terms of lives lost (which is anywhere between 200,000 - 300,000 people) the only ones recorded since 1900 that may have been more devastating is the cyclone in Bangladesh or the China earthquake, both in the 1970s. When you look at the damage -- that whole communities are wiped out, that miles and miles (and miles) of agricultural land are now unusable and will stay so for a long time because of the salt deposits brought in by the tsunami waves, that some communities no longer have freshwater supplies because all their wells been infiltrated with salt and waste, to name a few issues -- I'd say this hardly qualifies as being on the "smaller side" of natural disasters. I mean, this is NOT just about burying bodies, replacing some boats, and rebuilding houses for hundreds of thousands of people, Boots.
I know that's a lot of data and probably not many care, and I realize you're being flippant and not malicious, but the inaccuracy in your comment above was bugging me.
*Edit: And Boots - I know your original point was to defend John Hill. And as you know I never took offense to his donation joke. It's just unfortunate that you had to, in all seriousness, go further and keep on making thoughtless comments about the tsunami and efforts associated with it.

I hope so, and I appreciate you saying that; thank you.
And just so I can get back on topic: Fun how the journal is getting updated more often these days. I guess John Hill is really trying to earn those 25,000 dollars.

"these message boards are much more serious than i thought!"
We are serious when the issues are serious. While I trust amasis's information more than yours, boots, lets assume that you are correct and it was on the "small side". Despite all that 300,000 lives were lost, I don't care how big or small you think that is, that is still a hell of alot of deaths. I don't care if what America's motives were, as long as we did our share (which I still think we should be doing more).
