Anyone know the reason for the new Donkey in Shrek? I have read on here so many things about Shrek and they all seemed to include the fact that Chester wasn't all that good. Is it really that simple?

Wasn't working out in the part.

And now all we can do is wait to see how Daniel Breaker fares in the role.

Happens all the time.

Robert Morse (the Wizard) and Kirk McDonald (Boq) were let go from WICKED after the show's pre-Broadway/out-of-town run in San Francisco.

Penny Fuller replaced another actress who was originally cast as Eve Harrington during the pre-Broadway/out-of-town run of APPLAUSE.

Lainie Kazan was replaced during SEESAW rehearsals with Michelle Lee.

Solange Sandy (as Helene) and Natascia Diaz (as Nickie) were let go from the pre-Broadway/out-of-town run of the 2005 Broadway revival of SWEET CHARITY on the show's last stop (Boston) before Broadway. They were replaced by Janine LaManna and Kyra DaCosta.

During the pre-Broadway/out-of-town LaJolla run of THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, star Erin Dilly was replaced by her understudy Sutton Foster.

Its endless.

Well, I hope Daniel does well. My kids go to the same performing arts high school he attended and my son got to meet him last summer. It's exciting when someone from here makes it on Broadway!

Don't forget the majority of the company (sans Hunter Foster and Martin Robinson) were let go after the pre-Broadway run of the "Little Shop" revival. Even the poor Logo was replaced.

This is what out-of-town tryouts are for: getting a production before an audience, see what works and what doesn't. That includes all aspects of the show: songs, scenes, costumes, lighting, choreography, staging... and even casting. Sometimes whole characters can even get cut (SEUSSICAL had a whole slew of other characters and storylines when it premiered in Boston, to name one example). Its all the "beauty" of out-of-town tryouts.

To go off-topic, the tone of that LSOH poster is all wrong for what was the final product of that revival. The poster they ended up using was pretty fantastic.

That said, I LOVE that Foster/Ripley poster.

I, personally, preferred the pre-Broadway poster AND production to what eventually transpired from the hands of Jerry Zaks.

And, yes, I remember reading about all of the DRASTIC changes made to Seussical. It's a shame that show didn't fare better; I thought it was sweet.

Amen again.

I LOVE the revival poster and get a ridiculous amount of joy everytime I look at it or the album cover with the same image.

Hey everyone...

I know that the post of Chester Gregory in his Donkey costume got deleted but I was wondering if anyone could e-mail me pictures of him in costume because I would really like to see it:
renren71587@bellsouth.net

legal or not I want to see them please.

I think that it is really messed up how they treated Chester Gregory. They never gave him any press or showed any photos of him in the Donkey costume at all when he went through 5 different costumes while he was out in Seattle. They just threw him out there and gave him no sense of direction and just wrote him off like it was nothing. They made him the scapegoat of the project and just threw him on stage with material he had just learned that day while others had been studying their lines for months to a year. They did Chester Gregory wrong and I for one feel really bad for him, I have stuck for him and will continue to stand by him. Shrek's producers did not treat him well at ALL and it is not fair to him...

So if anyone has pictures of him please e-mail it to me since we can't post it or it will get deleted...

nyc_chick02,

I'm sure he was in no way, shape, or form the only one that had to memorize lines in a matter of hours. In an out of town try-out lines are constantly being changed. If you had some role in the production I could see you saying all of this stuff, but if not you really have no basis for any of this. And most of the stuff you have brought up is pretty standard in a try-out.

Rant, Wickud, Rant, Wickud, Rant! We're not gonna pay Rant! 'Cause everythink is Wickud!

I can understand as to why you would say that....It's just that I feel that Chester Gregory is being disrespected by the Shrek cast. I'm sure he wasn't the only one but the way that they treated him wasn't right at all. They had no idea what to do with the role of Donkey because they didn't know if they wanted Donkey to be like Eddie Murphy, make him his own, focus on the music or the acting... Chester isn't the reason why he got knocked off. It's the direction that he wasn't given because they didn't know what to do with him or the role

And they've figured out what to do with the role and Chester doesn't figure into it.

He still got a goddamn check. He'll still get jobs. His life and career will go on.

Get over it.
