mehhhh- Dreams of Raul playing role = crushed forever.
Hodge wouldn't be terrible, but idk if he really has the charisma and allure to play Barnum.

Neil Patrick Harris was also up for this with John Doyle directing, but he was too busy with HIMYM and the baby came along.
I think Doug could be good. I'd much rather see him in an original show where he's not playing a role created by someone else again.

1981 was a loooong time ago....and my memory of Jim Dale/Tony Orlando was 30's, although I remember it more as an ageless role...but someone in their prime....and I think Hodge might be a bit too old, but it wouldn't keep me from seeing it.

30's would be what I would imagine for Barnum although a youthful fortysomething actor like Barrowman or Hugh Jackman would be fine. Any younger would be too unbelievable.

Brian would be a PERFECT Barnum.
I remember John Doyle was going to do his production somewhere in CA. After a few months, it was canceled and he deemed it impossible to do with the Actor/Musician formula.

"Can he do the stunts?"
This. As performed by Jim Dale and Michael Crawford, this is a very physical role, involving gymnastics. juggling, and some pretty intense aerial work, including a tight rope walk. Hard to see Hodge doing any of that, but who knows? Crawford studied with Big Apple circus before assaying the role.
Fwiw, Crawford was in his late 39's, Dale in his mid-40's, I believe. Much of Crawford's performance can be seen on youtube. I don't care for Doyle's style of actors with musical instruments, but there have always been actors playing musical instruments in Barnum. I'd rather not see Barnum or his wife Charity playing one much, though.
Been wanting to see a revival of this for years, but I'm not sure this is one I want to see. It's a great and fun show, with some very catchy tunes.
