The Toronto Star is reporting that Garth Drabinsky is orchestrating a sensational comeback as a theatrical producer, even though by the time his new productions open he could be living in a jail cell.

Posted: 12/4/09 at 1:52pmI don't know how successful his comeback will be. I don't think I would want to go and see a show that is being produced by a guy who is either in or should be in jail. His projects do sound interesting, but I don't think he should be trusted.

Posted: 12/4/09 at 1:53pmI think whatever shows he produces, he should try to get James Barbour in them!

Good for him be damned. There were numerous people actually harmed by his actions (and the ones he was convicted of were probably just the tip of the iceberg.) He should be barred from the industry for life. (Although I'm sure some of the "legends" of this business are looking up at him from Satan's griddle with admiration.)

Posted: 12/4/09 at 3:47pmThat Drabinsky bastard destroyed movie-going in NYC in the 1980s with his obscene Cineplex Odeon chain. Let him rot in an unlit cell, sealed in a pit of his own filth.

Posted: 12/4/09 at 5:51pmOk, the article says that Parade won Best Musical and Brent Carver won the Tony. As much as I would like that to be true, that is, of course, highly inaccurate.

Did anyone else read this article and immediately think of Prisoners of Love?

I think you may have misread that, or they have made a correction since you have, because it is talking about Kiss of the Spider Woman winning Best Musical and Brent Carver winning his Tony for that, not for Parade.

The man has an insane ego but I do like a lot of what he did--without him there wouldn't have been a Parade, Ragtime, Prince's Showboat, probably Kiss of the Spider Woman in its current form, Fosse, Sweet Smell of Success, Seussical (ok, not sure if I'd care if this never existed...)... He built a gorgeous much needed theatre in Vancouver and for a brief time made that city a viable musical theatre market...
I reallyu don't get an all black Kiss of the Spiderwoman (which was often cast with blacks anyway wasn'tit?)

He also refurbished the Pantages Theatre (now the Canon) in Toronto, and produced there what many consider one of the finest productions of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which helped create a huge theatrical tourism market in that city.
Obviously, PHANTOM is relatively the same everywhere, but the execution of the Toronto production was particularly sumptuous.

Well every few years we get an article (by the same journalist, no less) that re-iterates basically the same thing.
