I like DRACULA more than I like WICKED. I can say that honestly... "Before the Summer Ends" moves me more than "For Good".
I just have to wonder what these people would be saying had they not read any of the reviews or people's opinions here who say it sucks because they don't want to disagree with critics who continue writing mean spirited reviews to even be noticed, and had Cornie not taken the fun out of Broadway by bashing everything theatre is about: having fun and connecting with people.

Honey are you tied to the show because your taste SUCKS.
I liked Wicked very much. Actually the more I hear the lyrics the more I like it.
It is no Q, BUT IT IS A GREAT SHOW.
Don't get me wrong I like CAROLINE BETTER.
But Dracula was just special effects and eye candy.
No substance.
Wicked at least had it all.

Who the **** cares if Before the Summer Ends was more moving than for good. why dont you say well i thought BSE was a moving song?!?!?!? Just the constant comparing to everything is really getting annoying

I saw Dracula this weekend and I don't think it was as bad as everyone is saying it is. The sets and costumes were absolutely breathtaking. Kelli O'Hara gave a fine performance, as did Tom Hewitt, and Ritchie. When it comes to acting the only problem I had was Melissa Errico, one has to wonder if that woman has half a clue as to what it means to connect with anyone, be it on stage or off.
The music to me, was not Wildhorn. I thought that it was a bit too different than his other shows, which have music I love. I got the impression that it seemed as if he intentionally went away from what he writes best, pop influenced ballads. Now, to me this doesn't quite work so well, although to say I hated the music would be a lie. It's the type of music I think I need to hear more than once to truly decide if I like it or not. Some of the lyrics I wasn't too fond of, but over all I didn't think it was that bad.
There were a few plot spots that I was like, give me a break, but they follow the book closely I'm told so there's nothing to do about that. The original was campy, and this version tries to be more serious than it does campy and finds a hard time finding a middle ground.
I do think people are roasting it far more than they should though, it isn't crap.
I mean, I know I honestly laughed at loud about "There's nothing worse than crumbs in the bed."

Yes, we know there is an audience for Dracula. Only 54% buy the tickets. Only 48% actually show up. Only 41% stay for Act II.
The show is a disaster. I have said it since before the review came out.

I liked it. *shrugs* Maybe you wont. Atleast go see and decide for yourself. Dont let other peoples tastes dictate your own. If you are worrying about it being bad/waste of money - buy the cheaper seats.
I was surprised at HOW much people dont like the show, and at the reasons .. i.e. too much flying - because i didnt find it to be to much at all. My view is that they fly SO much in the book. It is as natural, if not more natural, as walking to them. And i believe in staying so close to the book in everything else, this just followed suit. Yet my complaint in that aspect is that they look unnatural walking when they did because they did fly so much.
All in all, everyone is different. I enjoyed it, you may too. Dont write it off because others had bad experiences.

Posted: 8/26/04 at 9:40amI , for one, would never pay upwards of $100.00 to see something that the majority of critics AND people on this board have given a "thumbs-down" to. (not a Wildhorn fan anyway). There's just too much negative press and gossip about this show to make me the least bit interested in it. And I have to agree with the statement about Melissa Erico connecting to anyone or anything - she is all about technique (certainly a beautiful instrument, I won't argue that) but she never makes a connection with the people around her on stage - and to me, that is one of the worst things an actor can do...distance themselves and appear cold and heartless. (unless a role specifically calls for that - but even in THAT instance - all good actors know that there are no complete villains - even the worst character has his/her heart and should play all layers of emotion - otherwise the character is just booooring.)

Is Dracula worth seeing?
Certainly not at $101.25, which is what I paid two nights before its official opening. If you can get a deeply discounted ticket (like $40 or so) it is worth seeing the sets, costumes, and special effects. That must be what $7.2 of the $7.4 million dollars was spent on.
As to the rest of the production: The music wasn't bad... it just wasn't good. It never soared in my opionion. They NEVER told the story or made you care about (love or hate) the characters. The dialogue was, in a word, awful - perhaps the WORST book of a show I have ever seen. Singing voices were fine for most of the cast. The guy playing Renfield was a real - perhaps the only - highlight for me among the actors. But the shows JOYS were few and far between. Several critics used the term "boring" to describe the show. Fortunately, I arrived at the theatre well rested and the sets and effects held my attention, or I think it would have been an easy show to sleep through.

Posted: 8/26/04 at 10:26amI say...If you are interested in a show, go see it. Don't go by what the critics or other people say about it. There are shows that critics and theatregoers din't like that I really enjoyed.

cats, for someone who said, "I never endorsed, nor defended DRACULA as a piece of brilliant theatrics. I nearly support it. I never said it was well written, nor would I ever say that, because it's not true." this post among others proves otherwise... you liked the show in La Jolla, but a show usually changes for it's broadway run... apparently, this show did not change for the better... almost every review of the BRAODWAY production leaned toward negative... i've read only 1 positive review, the one it appeared you searched and searched for until you found it, written by, according to the ever-knowledgeable Margo, a "hack" ... wy not come to New York and see the current production and then make an objective observation, not clouded by your obvious love of Dracula, the La Jolla production... most of the people on these boards who have seen the show, either like it or don't, leaning more to the don't side, but at least they have seen this production and can make their own educated comments on it... also, BEFORE the regular reviews came out, we were privileged to read a performance by performance critique of the show in previews, before anyone was influenced by those published reviews...
i for one, cannot comment on whether or not i liked the show, as i have not seen it, but i have to tell you, that based on what i've read, i'm in no hurry...
and really, is that ALL theater is about? having fun and connecting with people?
