Xanadu was ROBBED!
YAY PASSING STRANGE!
(ps Heidi is amaaaaazing)
I don't think it means much considering that IN THE HEIGHTS is going to be the big new musical winner and AUGUST is going to take the play prizes. HEIGHTS is still going to take book, score, musical, choreography, and possibly featured actor at the Tonys, in my opinion.
I should have watched the Country Music Awards.
ITH wont take featured actor at all! Gypsy has those acting catagorys locked. My main question now is that Szot won for best actor does that mean the tony is his or does Evans and Lin still have a shot?

I love that Scott Pask won Outstanding Set Design of a Play for LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES.
I want that set for my spare bedroom.
XANADU'S CHANCES FOR 'BEST MUSICAL'
None. Sorry, fans, but XANADU was only nominated for four Tonys. Of the four, the show will most definitely win Best Book of a Musical (there isn't strong competition, and the book is, apparently, very very good).
But what else does it have a chance at? Patti LuPone will (unless the hand of God strikes her down) win Best Leading Actress over Kerry Butler, and IN THE HEIGHTS has had Best Choreography in the bag the entire season.
The voters won't want to give Best Musical to a show with only one other win. Also, XANADU does have haters, certainly more than some people think.
So sorry, but it won't win. The race is between IN THE HEIGHTS and PASSING STRANGE (with IN THE HEIGHTS as the most likely).
BEST LEADING ACTOR
Is looking a lot better for Paulo Szot. He's definitely the front-runner, although Miranda could upset if Stew and Heidi win Best Original Score.
'BEST MUSICAL' CHANCES FOR 'PASSING STRANGE'
Not really helped by this win. Drama Desk has a history of picking Best Musicals that don't match up with the Tony winners (SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, while Tony picked LA CAGE AUX FOLLES; DROWSY CHAPERONE, while Tony picked JERSEY BOYS, etc.)
BEST FEATURED ACTOR IN A MUSICAL
Will probably be Daniel Breaker. Boyd Gaines has won three Tonys already, and they'll probably want to encourage new talent. Plus, it'll be a nice win for PASSING STRANGE.
I'm still upset Rondi Reed didn't win Best Featured Actress.
I mean, I have no problem with Linda Lavin, but Rondi was really, really good.
Surprised at the orchestration win for "Sunday" based on what everyone has said about its orchestra.
No way Bustopher. Boyd is a Tony baby. They love him. The award is his. The only thing Passing Strange has a shot at is Best Score or Best Musical if the voters pick artsy over splashy. Paulo has actor tied up, the Gypsy trio all have theirs, Xanadu has book, South Pacific has best revival and all of the design awards, possibly losing sound design to In the Heights. Lighting could go to Sunday or South Pacific, but my guess would be a South Pacific sweep. Choreography is between Cry-Baby and In the Heights, probably going to the latter.
And don't worry scaryclowns, Rondi will win the Tony. She's not only the only person in her category even nominated for the Drama Desk, but the voters will want to reward August in the most ways possible. Since August will most likely not win any design awards, it's probably going to get 4 (Play, director, Deeana/Amy, and Rondi).
In the Heights will get the awards that Passing Strange Got. Everything else will be very similar.

I think Lin still has a chance, since lately the Tony's have been awarding people who originate roles over people in revivals The last time an actor in a revival won was 2000 when Brian Strokes Mitchell won for Kiss Me Kate
I think it's safe to say LuPone, Szot, Benanti, Gaines, South Pacific and Sher are locks for the Tonys. That's all I can predict right now. This is the only year I really don't care what happens with Best Musical, Score, Book, etc. because I rather dislike all of the shows nominated.
And as much as I thought Xanadu was a campy mess, it was nice to see Beane give such a geniune (and funny) speech last night. Good for him!
I don't think Boyd Gaines is as much of a lock as people seem to think he is. He has three Tonys already and Featured Actor is a great place to award young and up and coming talent as can be seen in the majority of the last few winners (anyone remember Christian Hoff randomly winning two years back?)
And when has Herbie ever been an award-worthy role? It's mostly a filler role (every actor that's been nominated has been so as filler...let's face it.) And it's not like Gaines is giving a great performance (which he is) out of nowhere...everyone knows he's a great actor (hence the three Tonys and the raves for his performance).
IN THE HEIGHTS will take score and possibly orchestrations, an award which everyone thought was PASSING STRANGE's and the show will find it hard to be awarded in most other categories so I think Breaker is the show's best chance at a win although I do think DeJesus is a definite possibility.
I think Patti and Benanti are locks but I don't think Gaines is really worth placing all your bets on at this point.

Gaines a lock? I dont think so.
Look out for Danny Burstien or Daniel Breaker. Id really be surprised if Tony Voters were jumping to give Gaines his fourth Tony for playing yet another Herbie.
Hooray for Conleth Hill! *does the Ivan victory dance*

Just a thought re: Boyd Gaines. Some posters have cited the reason for his not winning the Tony is that he already has three and it's time for someone else to get it. I don't think that argument holds water -- look at the multiple wins by Audra Macdonald (4 and counting), Gwen Verdon (4), Angela Lansbury (4), Julie Harris (5). I'm not so sure that a past history of multiple wins discounts a nominee for being recognized again.
I think the winners were the [title of show] cast and their
kickin' opening number
The Drama Desks have become a complete joke.
If PASSING STRANGE were still a tiny little show playing at the Public and ADDING MACHINE were playing at the Belasco, PASSING STRANGE would have gone home empty handed last night and ADDING MACHINE would have been the big winner.
I love both shows, but I think it is absolutely absurd that the Desks ignored Off-Broadway last night simply because they want to have their names splashed all over Broadway advertising and marquees.
Don't feel bad about Rondi, scaryclowns-she'll get the Tony, I think. She's grown tremendously in her role. Her performance has only gotten better (and I thought it was great the first time I saw it).
Gaines is not a lock, to me he's just like any ordinary actor. The will give it to someone who is new. Patti has it. Laura probably has it. In The Heights has all the music ones except one because Passing Strange will take one. I think there are three. Xanadu take Book, because it's not a very strong category but I wouldn't be surprised if ITH takes it. Light should go to ITH and dancing and other things. All I know is Lin Manuel is walking out of there with a Tony

Just wanted to let you know you're not doing the Ivan-dance alone -- I'm dancing with you

We all know you want In the Heights to win, but the odds of Miranda beating Szot are slim. Miranda is a sprightly little imp who turns in a nice performance and who will likely win score, but Szot is simply magnificent. On second performance, the performance has gotten richer. And the vocals are stil stunning.
And I don't think Mr. Gaines or anyone else here really gives a rat's ass that you think he's just an ordinary actor By he way, did you see Gypsy? Did you see Joruney's End last season?
By the way, did ANY of you idiots denying Gaines his Tony even SEE him? A thankless part and an ordinary performance, my ass.
And thank you Ed for making an excellent point!
Speaking of Gaines. Here's a great interview with an incredibly modest Gaines. He talks about why Herbie is not a thankless part for him.

Gaines has this!
I must have missed something, but why was In the Heights shut out?
