^You’re acting like they cast some random girl who just happened to be light skinned…….it was friggin Beyoncé. One of the biggest stars of our time. OF COURSE they were going to cast her. And I agree, the differences in skin color between Effie and Deena added another layer to their conflict.
I found a lot of the “drama” that the original cast had about the movie to be unwarranted and just kinda bitter.

That none of them were consulted about it. Holliday felt snubbed she wasn’t offered her original role even though she was 100 years too old for the part.
The original cast got extremely territorial about the film version - they came off as entitled to have a piece of it - which never happens when a stage show is adapted for film.
Sheryl Lee Ralph had an issue with the fact that a darker skinned actress was not cast as Deena and that they went for the much lighter skinned Beyoncé.

Sheryl Lee Ralph did a lot of press expressing her opinions about the film and feeling slighted that she wasn't consulted. It was embarrassing. Especially since her last credit at the time was Clean House, a Hoarders type show, where Niecy Nash cleaned her house. Tragic.
