Do NOT drop Gentleman's Guide. I don't know a thing about you but I am confident you will love it !!!
Curious Incident should be at the top of your list!

Billy Porter is not doing the same work as he was when he won his Tony-- and he's rarely in the show these days.
I highly recommend If/Then and The Last Ship-- two original beautiful musicals.

Thank you for the lovely welcome loliveve!
You Can't Take it With You is def on our list so it Cabaret.
Husband is rooting to drop If/Then now especially after hearing the board or Hedwig. I'm not about to give Hedwig up though!
Don't give up Hedwig. I still think If/Then is not a must-see. Leave that slot open-maybe you two will find something that surprises you.
Personally I loved IF/THEN. I will admit it is not for everyone, and it is a show that you will either really love or really hate. Also if you are in the city on October 28th I HIGHLY recommend you try to catch Side Show. It is a glorious production!

gleek4114 sadly we leave on the 26th
Side Show does look wonderful!
Thanks for the vote for If/Then. Tastes are so subjective. I think we are open to a lot of things and don't always just love the mega hits. I read on another board about why people leave the theatre and people in LA did not care for Marjorie Prime, we saw it a couple of weeks ago, and while we did not love it, we enjoyed it and it made us think of our aging parents and dialogue about memory. If I only had a few more days of time off in New York!

Thanks dreaming!
I'm listening to the cast album of Hedwig now! We really loved the movie. Husband just thinks JCM did such a great job with the film and he doesn't trust Dexter to pull it off.
Making discoveries is 1/2 the fun. He really wants to see what else is playing at the Public and Signature. He also wanted to check out BAM for the piece Pina is doing. I like dance but not sure I like it that much!
My suggestion would be to drop “Gentleman’s.” First off, it may run longer than “If/Then,” so you have a better chance at getting to see that in the future. And, for me, “If/Then” is a much more worthy show. Also, Idina is “If/Then”’s biggest asset, so if you can see it with her now, I would do it (I don’t think the current performers in “Gentleman’s” are giving must-see performances, whereas Idina really is doing excellent work in “If/Then”). I was also very, very disappointed in “Gentleman’s…” when I went on my NYC trip this past summer. It was my least favorite show I saw.
Then again, I also think Billy Porter isn’t a must see, so you could stick with your original list and just check out the “Kinky” tour in LA. I actually think it’s a plus that you would get to see “Kinky” without him.
For me, the cast and the set were the only reasons to see If/Then, but they were not enough for me to recommend the show unless it was on TKTS and you didn't want/need to see anything else on sale that day. I saw the Cabaret national tour and the video of the original Donmar production and I'd only see this production again for Emma Stone. Personally, I'd consider Matilda must-see rather than Kinky Boots with or without Billy Porter. The Broadway set for Matilda will have to be scaled down considerably for the tour as well as probably the number of children. I loved everything about it. The staging and choreography continually surprised me throughout the show.
I beg to differ regarding Gentleman's Guide: Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham are incredible. It's got a wonderful chemistry with the entire cast, but Pinkham and Mays are excellent. I still think you should try 'pot luck' at least once and do something spur of the moment.

Interesting to see wildly diverging opinions on different things (not surprising though), and I agree with haterobics that there doesn't seem to be much "middle ground" for IF/THEN. I look at it like this, though: It's the only 100% original and only contemporary thing on Broadway now and will probably close sooner than other "safe" bets, and may never be revived; online aggregate scores for the show is better than what you find on this board; the fact that a show IS controversial and dividing (so to speak), that only makes me want to see it more. But I like heady things, and if you or your husband want a relaxing, laid-back approach to theater, this is not the show to see.
Just adding an agreement with Mister Matt that “Matilda” is a must-see over “Kinky” and definitely something I would recommend. If you haven’t seen it, I think it’s one of the best musicals on Broadway right now (and, he’s right, in terms of a full-scale set and large children’s cast, it’s likely a tour of “Matilda” will be lacking in these areas).
As most people on this board who know me in real life will tell you, I like headier, edgier musicals. I thought I'd love If/Then...and I didn't.
I would agree with the comments suggesting Matilda. It is fantastic. It is certainly not just a show for children.
I would also agree that Kinky Boots on tour may be just as good as on Broadway. When I saw it, poor Billy Porter was so hoarse from overuse you could barely understand what he was saying.
Regarding Gentleman's Guide, Jefferson Mays' performance is incredible. Although NPH was great in Hedwig, I was definitely rooting for Mays to win the Tony. I can't imagine someone replacing him on Broadway or on tour and doing as good a job. See Gentleman's Guide !!!! And maybe Matilda !!!
I saw Kinky Boots on tour in San Diego and the cast is very strong, especially Lola! I enjoyed Porter on Broadway but honestly the guy doing it on tour is just as good...
I also really liked If/Then. I am however a big Idina fan and she really does give a fantastic performance in this show. I wouldn't drop it, its a show you need to see and make up your own mind about.

Thanks so much everybody!
I am in a real quandary now! I do plan on seeing Matilda but since it's coming to LA at the Ahmanson (pretty big stage)I thought it was safe to see the touring company. Now it's been suggested that the touring show won't have as big of a cast or presence. I'm having enough trouble dropping one show already !
