Uh oh. With that Times review, can Sutton give Patti and LaChanze a run for their Tony money?
Maybe this year the voters will actually vote an original Musical with an Original Score it's deserved TONY.
and I think that is DROWSY.
and Margo is right
The crtics don't have much worth here, remember SIDESHOW.

I think it's certainly a possibility that Drowsy could win Best Musical. Remember that while the reviews for Jersey Boys were mostly positive, there were a few that had some qualified criticisms of the show and even -- people tend to forget -- a few that were rather mixed. Drowsy will likely do about the same in the review department. Also, the fact that Drowsy has a completely original score and isn't based on anything (and isn't a jukebox show -- though most people don't care about that, some definitely do) is going to win it some votes.
PJ,
I think Sutton will be in Supporting Actress, rather than Leading, even though the Drama Desk put her in Leading. It would be SO much wiser, because even though she is great in TDC, her part isnt as meaty as LaChanze's or Patti's.
The very fact that the "race" this year is between CHAPERONE and JERSSEY BOYS tells you a great deal about the decidedly sad state of the American musical -- better pastiche vs., better juke box. I wish both shows well, each with career-making performances and craft. But who is genuinely excited by the impact of either on the further development of our distinctly American form? Where, pray tell, is our next COMPANY? For that matter, I'd settle for our new BIG RIVER.
I think it's a big mistake to have Sutton nominated in the Lead category.
I still think Sutton will be considered featured.
The TONY belongs to Patti.
Right On Auggie
Maybe next year....
Sutton will get a best actress Nom
But I think Patti will take it.
Just watch. The voters will go chicken**** and vote for something like "Tarzan" or "Color Purple".
Were there any shows that Brantkey LOVED this season?
And "Jersey Boys" opened early in the season. "Drowsy" will be fresher in the voters minds...

Every time I see "nom" I do a double-take...
How many noms will Drowsy get?
Who cares if it opened earlier?
HAIRSPRAY still won and it opened early in the season.

and Bob martin's reviews will certainly put him in the Best Actor category.
I think Connick is lookin better everyday.

USA Today gives it Two-and-a-half Stars (out of Four):
"New musical The Drowsy Chaperone (* * ½ out of four), which opened Monday at Broadway's Marquis Theatre, is up for more Drama Desk Awards than any other production mounted this season.
The 14 nominations should surprise no one. An homage to the transporting power of old-fashioned musical comedy, Chaperone is narrated by a character simply called Man in Chair, a neurotic fan who is obsessed with an obscure 1928 romp titled, natch, The Drowsy Chaperone.
The fictional lost classic is presented as a show within a show, its zany antics interrupted and embellished by Man's wry commentary. It's a conceit that was bound to seduce critics and theater lovers.
Not all of them, though. Call me a boor, but I've always been wary of entertainment that wears its cleverness on its sleeve.
In the opening sequence, Man recalls "a time when people sat in darkened theaters and thought to themselves, 'What have George and Ira got for me tonight?' Or 'Can Cole Porter pull it off again?' "
I share some of that nostalgia. But ingenious as they were, Porter and the Gershwins are worshiped not for the way their words and music impress us but for how they delight and move us.
The creators of Chaperone, in contrast, reveal a snickering self-consciousness that dilutes the sense of joy vital to this kind of tribute. Like that other critically adored escapade Urinetown!, Chaperone offers too much winking and not enough wonder."

Auggie - I sincerely think they had what you're looking for in CAROLINE, OR CHANGE - and didn't accept it.
Brantley loved WELL, THE LIEUTENANT OF INSISHMORE and i think PAJAMA GAME.

And he just raved over THE HISTORY BOYS and LANDSCAPE OF THE BODY.
This is how the producers will turn this show into a big hit. Here's the plan. They'll do nothing. They have AT LEAST twenty-five money quotes to put on the ads and posters like "hilarious" "great night" "funny" (Brantley provided "Poised to become the sleeper of the Broadway season". Thanks, Ben) and then the word of mouth will get out. People WANT desperately to be entertained. To have a fun night out. And this show delivers. In fact, this should be an easy sell, the title excepted. But even then, the title may work really well. In Toronto, people called it "That drowsy show" or "the dopey chaperone" and that got the first laugh. Then there was the second laugh when they heard the correct name. And already, the audience is laughing and they haven't even bought the tickets yet.
This show will make its own gravy.
I think JERSEY BOYS will probably still win, because the overall tone of the major reviews for CHAPERONE is positive but not ecstatic. Plus, as much as New York based Tony voters may identify with the hero of CHAPERONE, the regional theatre owners will vote overwhelmingly in favor of JERSEY BOYS, which will be much more popular on tour. I'm not even sure CHAPERONE would attempt a major national tour. There might be the fear the show doesn't have enough mainstream appeal.
The next few weeks of ticket sales and campaigning will determine everything. It will definitely be a fun race to watch!
Agreed, Michael.

I still think we are under-estimating the power of THE COLOR PURPLE. It got probably just about the same caliber reviews as JERSEY did and its also a huge hit with an orginial score.
While the Best Musical nominees will no doubt include:
The Drowsy Chaperone
Jersey Boys
&
The Color Purple,
I DO still believe that last slot is open.
Tarzan and The Wedding Singer will be duking it out for the last nod and The Wedding Singer will probably get it.
Disney Backlash will prob'ly prove you right.
Myabe they will be smart and only nominate three as it should be.
