"So much for any hopes of Marie Osmond getting a chance of playing The Drowsy Chaperone on Broadway. Maybe the tour?"
What a great idea! I'd love to see her. Maybe stunt cast Donnie as Man in Chair.
The closing is sad news, but as someone pointed out, now every regional theatre company will likely be doing this show, and it is on tour. Hopefully, they'll add stops or start a second tour.
Will they have two performances that day or will it be just the matinee? I ask because Ticketmaster has 7pm showing, yet the Playbill article only mentions Sundays at 3pm.

This is sad news. For some reason I think that Gypsy Robe performance of Saget's settled it's fate. It's too bad they couldn't have found a more universal Actor for the part. Bob Saget's reputation hurt the show.
They could have moved the show but then they would still have Saget and it seems he just wasn't right for the part. Bob Martin just forgot that Americans are more conservative than Canadians. It's just too bad another up and coming Actor wasn't found for the MIC. It would have been interesting to see someone else play Drowsy for a short period time since Beth had to leave the role.
It will show up in Community Theatres and elsewhere. At least I can catch JoAnne in Wicked. I can't say I was looking forward to going to New York in Feb.
Beth was saying her last day was Jan. 20th so I think this was one of those, we will see, moments. They must not have been able to find a good replacement for her. Announcing a closing within ten days seems rather short notice to me?
Bob might show up the last performance? I was hoping he might consider performing two more weeks but I guess he had other things to do. I just feel bad for the rest of the cast who have to find other things to do in Jan/Feb. They really made the show.
The Tour Cast is doing really well so I don't want any replacements for that. I too am so happy I had the chance to fly out and see it. It was a great show.
Drowsy, although they said it recouped its investment, is not pulling in a lot of money right now. Guess it is better it closes right before the Broadway winter slump. Such a shame, it is a great show!

Saget's performance at the Gypsy Robe Ceremony has nothing to do with the fact that the show isn't making enough money to stay open.
"They could have moved the show" That would cost money. Lots of money. Money that they weren't bringing in.
"They must not have been able to find a good replacement for her." I'm sure there were plenty of suitable replacements for the role - but it's not making money.
It's not Saget's fault the show is closing - the show is NOT MAKING MONEY! Your arguments are completely baseless.
Ditto Yankeefan007. Drowsy's weekly gross was at a low already, even before Bob Saget came in. He had nothing to do with the show's closing. He just wasn't as big of a hit as producers thought he'd be.

You know what I'm really really sad about? That Colin Mochrie never did the role. I would pay the price of a premium seat to go watch him be the Man in Chair.
Popular_elphie...I had the SAME thought as you. I could totally see Colin Mocherie in the role. Pretty unlikely at this point, though. Isn't he doing some comedy tour with Brad Sherwood? I saw it at Foxwoods Casino over the summer. But yeah, I agree he would've been great.

I saw Drowsy on the advice of Miss P. It turned out the first full day I was in the city last Spring was Bob's last day. I'm glad I got to see him in the role.
My avatar is a reminder to myself. I need lots of reminders...
The show wasn't making money because too many people didn't find Saget attractive enough to want to see the show. Delaying casting for MIC hurt it a lot. Sales went up and down. When Crombie left for the Tour, they sunk.
I would think that bringing in Saget was an attempt to bring up or keep sales up. That didn't happen. I'm not saying he did not do his best in the role. What I am saying is that not enough people wanted to see the show again to see his take on it.
I was reading those comments though from the Gypsy Robe competition and so many weren't very good. He has a select audience. I can't say I enjoy his humor too much but it wasn't going to stop me from seeing the show. He was playing the part. I wish though instead of focusing all on Saget, they stuck with selling what the show was all about. That is just what I think would have been more successful. Hanging a show on one Actor is difficult no matter what and to me it rarely works.
I also don't think that Drowsy is a show most of Saget's fans would really want to see. The proof is in the sales. The casting did not work. This doesn't mean he is a bad Actor, it just means that his reputation did not attract families or tourist in what is usually the busiest time of the year.
You actually think people were going to see the show for Jonathan Crombie? What planet do you live on?
Tckt, you're a flip-flopper. Make up your mind. Saget's routine doesn't factor into the fact that he's reciting a script. (It's not like Larry David in The Producers.) Updated On: 12/19/07 at 07:14 PM
So Tkt2ride, which was it? Bob Saget's performance at the Gypsy show (which happened TWO DAYS AGO), or the fact they couldn't find a replacement for Beth (for a FEW WEEKS)?
I am pretty sure that NEITHER of those things had a single thing to do with deciding to close this show at this time.
Oh, and I am not sure if you are aware of this, but I am pretty sure Saget doesn't do his off-colored humor as MIC. So I really don't think that was keeping the audiences away.
"What I am saying is that not enough people wanted to see the show again to see his take on it."
While this is true, he is not the reason the show is closing. Go and review Drowsy's grosses for the past year. They were doing fairly well in the beginning of the year, with most of the grosses in the $600,000-800,000 range. By the time May came around, the grosses gradually declined. The state the grosses are in now is not a direct result of Bob Saget. First of all, the strike did not help at all. Second, it is being drowned out by other bigger name shows such as Jersey Boys, Wicked, and Little Mermaid. People were predicting the show would close before Saget even came in. While he did not help the show build up the weekly grosses, he did not hurt it either. I don't think he was necessarily turning people away from the show. The tourists already had their minds made up and simply didn't want to see Drowsy over some of the other shows on Broadway.
