I have seen Idina AND Eden Live in the role of Elphaba, and neither one of them screamed. HAVE YOU SEEN THEM?!??

I havn't actually seen either of them live, but I've seen LOTS of *coughhackwheeze*, of many various things they've done, and.. aside from the Defying Graviy tony performance (which WAS screamy, and was most DEF like, 100000x worse than any other performance idina has ever given.. partly due to the fact that I heard the moniters were off and so she had know pitch reference to start with), I have NEVER heard either of them scream, at least- it doesn't sound like screaming to me. I dont know, maybe they sound completely different live, but.. assuming they dont, they def sing, they dont scream :)
Willact~ I think the only person who screemed was Shoshana.
wait........she didn't even belt defying gravity she sang it in her head voice....
I guess I'm a prime example of what happens when you make an Idina-obsessed freak mad. They start talking about things they know nothing about and instead rag on the people who actually sung the part right.
Oh, and the Idina Tony Performance was exactly what you got at any other performance of Wicked, as far as that song goes.

She sounded perfect when I saw her, Shoshana kinda treated WICKED like an American Idol contest.

just for the record, I'm totally not ragging on anyone else who's played elphaba. I happen to think Shoshana has a GREAT voice, and so does Julia. Now, personally I like the sound of idina's voice better, but that's just my personal opinion, and does not take away from the fact that sho and julia and ana can all sing their asses off :) I'm simply defending idina, because I think she is amazingly, amazingly talented. And just for the record, I apologize for starting this whole debate up haha. All I was saying originally is that idina was the only one who pronounced things in a way that didn't annoy me at all. lol. Seriously, I didn't even mean to make any comment on her singing at all! But yeah, while we're on it, I just dont see how idina and eden scream... because, again, I have a LOT to go on even though I've never seen them live (I have lots of wicked and other *cough*s with them in it), and NONE of them sound like the tony performance did. I can def tell the difference- and I can def see how the tony performance would be considered screamy. But again, unless somehow the sound on EVERY speaker people have used has completely distorted the sound and made it sound somehow 100000x better than whats actually going on, nither idina or eden sound screamy to me :)
"BroadwayGirl, have you seen Idina or Eden live?
Then come back and tell me they don't scream."
Yes. I've seen both live. Neither scream.
It's great that you, as a youngster, think you are an expert on singing, but I hate to burst your bubble. Idina Menzel, like everyone who tries to knock her technique, started out with classical training, and probably has had just as much, if not more than you. She has been in vocal training for years and years and knows what's good for her voice. She does not, and would not choose to scream instead of sing. She has a technique and she uses it. She may have her off nights and her off notes, but she DOES NOT SCREAM. By ANY strech of the imagination.
On top of that, if you did know what you were talking about, you wouldn't just assume that everyone whose voice is too harsh or "shrill" for your taste is "screaming." It simply isn't true. And it makes you look ridiculous.
Not to mention that your statement that "the Idina Tony Performance was exactly what you got at any other performance of Wicked, as far as that song goes," is just plain ignorant. Her Tony performance was a mess. I can admit that. It was nothing--NOTHING like what I saw any of the times I've ever seen her live in ANYTHING.
And Shoshana sung the part "right"? First of all, since when are there "right" and "wrong" in the arts? There are things that work and things that don't work. I DO know that Shoshana's prententious, over-zealous vocal-acrobatics and "let's see how many places I can put unnecessary riffs in" approach certainly did not work in the context of song-interpretation or acting, probably because the acting was non-existent.

First of all, I just have to say, thank you BroadwayGirl you are awesome, and said everything I wanted to say but more effectively. hehe.
And yeah, thats the other part I was going to get at, that Idina's ACTING is what really put her over the top. She has an amazing, absolutely gorgeous voice, but in the end what really matter's is how much you feel for elphie as a character, and Idina MADE you feel for her with her incredible vulnerability. Shoshana has a great pop voice, and she can do really incredible things with it, but I do personally feel that she was rather lacking in the showing of vulnerability. And props to her for choosing to play it differently than idina did, that was very brave of her, but I just dont personally think it worked nearly as well for the show as idina's acting did. What I LIKE about Eden is that she chose to bring some of that vulnerability back, and she kind of uses idina's performance as a building block and forms her own little elphie-isms on top of that. And I love that she realized that what idina did WORKED, and she used it without trying to BE idina :)
I may be young, but I know what sounds good and what DOESN'T. And to me, Eden and Idina DO NOT SOUND GOOD.
I beg you to type their names into YouTube and watch clips. I can't believe you would think that sounded good.
And I thought Katharine McPhee fans had more common sense that this...
"I may be young, but I know what sounds good and what DOESN'T. And to me, Eden and Idina DO NOT SOUND GOOD."
See, but this is my point. Whether or not their voices appeal to you is ONE thing. It is a matter of opinion. But to say they "scream" is just absurd.

BroadwayGirl, how old are you? From the looks of it, it looks like you are exactly the same age as me.
Eden screams. Get over it.

hehehhee. I'm sorry, I just find that really funny because that is precisely how I came to love both idina and eden After hearing idina on the RENT obcr and loving her voice,I youtubed her and was like "holy cow that girl is amazing" heck, the first video I ever watched of her was actually the tony performance! And I STILL really liked her, even from that!! haha, then after watching all her other stuff I realized that she was totally not up to par that night (again- I believe there was a moniter malfunction.. so, that would majorly mess ANYONE up), but still, it was that video that kind of made me take notice of her. Same with eden- it was through watching a youtube video of her singing Once Upon a Time from BKLYN live. So.. yeah.. trust me, I HAVE seen and heard lots of them. And as much as you maintain that they scream, which is okay, thats your opinion, I mantain that in my opinion they both have unbelievable voices, and acting skills for that matter :)
"BroadwayGirl, how old are you? From the looks of it, it looks like you are exactly the same age as me.

LOL. The reason I brought up your age is to compare you to people who are much older and much more experienced and knowledgable about what you're talking about (Eden and Idina). Not to compare our ages.
I don't see anything *I* need to get over. I'm not the one who decided to drop in on a thread about Eden Espinosa only to trash her talent. The more you talk about how Eden or Idina "screams," the more ridiculous you look (especially when you saythings like Shoshana sang the role "right"). Do yourself a favor and just drop it.

ummmm
this is very flaky of me but... can anyone claim this one:
Amanda Asked:
"Eden, I loved you in Brooklyn and can't wait to see you in Wicked! Out of all the costumes that you wore in Brooklyn and now get to wear Wicked, which is the favorite and which is the least favorite?"
because... my name is Amanda... and I asked a question, and I remember including Brooklyn in it (and I know not too many people actually liked the show)... but I don't know if that's my question... I CAN'T remember what I asked since it was really long ago...
but... can anyone claim that? haha.

ONLY idina has done that right, in all the different people I've heard.
Umm... could this POSSIBLY be because you're used to it?
Personally, I think both Idina and Eden scream. I love Idina, and I have only heard Eden, not seen her, but they both scream. Sometimes Idina sounds great doing it, sometimes not so much. But I don't like Eden's voice. Then again, Julia is my favorite Elphaba and her voice is so different from anyone that has played it.

I just logged on youtube and listened to a defying gravity performance of eden ...and I have to say, it (to me, mind you) does sound quite screamy and there are some off key notes as well.
specifically on "take a message back for me"
It sounds incredibly juvenile.
But I don't intend to be an asshole, so I would appreciate no "get your ears checked" comments.

Mark, thanks for backing me. However, I don't want you to get in trouble, so you should probably remove the link. That's illegal on this board.
But thanks again!!!!!

Ive seen / heard all of the elphabas. they are all very talented and very nice too. i havent come across one that wasnt kind. they all want the best...and in the end, they are doing it. theyre up there defying gravity nightly so i really dont think they care at all what goes on here lol. anyway, they are all very talented. unless anyone has been a lead in a broadway show and knows what its like to go up in front of thousand of people in a very vocally demanding show, i dont think they should be nasty. u dont have to love them...but once again, they're there. and i didnt think she was boring. she was actually really sweet (in the questions) and really amazing on stage. especially when u do it every night. :) thats just my 2 cents
haha how can you think shoshana screamed everything and not think idina or eden have?? shoshana clearly mixes almost everything she sings...and as far as her not "belting" defying gravity, i have respect for her doing what she did and still having a gorgeous gift without ruining it by screaming every night...and yes, she got a little riff happy now and then but thats shoshana and again, i respect her for being her because in the business, standing out is key and wether you like her or not, she sure as hell stands out from all the rest of the typical "broadway belters". but look up her Ars Nova concert on youtube. there she sings just about every style of music including a piece from porgy and bess...so although she chooses to pop everything up, she still has SOLID technique behind her which eden obviously lacks. but eden is still def. incredible in her own right. just a thought. later.
SNL, I don't swear ,but I feel a need to say this. . . CLAM THE F*UCK down, and before you start assuming stuff. I am a belter; and I could do it before I had vocal training. Look at people like Kelly Clarkson and LaToya London. Both of them were amazing belters before taking voice lessons at AI. You may not agree with me, or you may even be angry that you may NEVER be able to belt like her if you can't already do it a little bit without some training. Don't shoot the messanger.
Edit: Idina does sound screamy unless your a vocice teacher, listening to her live there's no way to really say. Personally, Though it may be unpleasant at MANY times she does have her own technique and I don't think she screams.

^um, I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that I wasn't calm?? lol
again, I was honestly just curious about the whole belting thing. I in no way was get angry about it. I believe you, I think I already said that before. I was just surprised because it always seemed to me to be pretty difficult, but that doesn't mean I dont believe you :)
I didn't realize there was a second page. On the first page you weren't very calm. . . I'm just sayin'
"and yes, she got a little riff happy now and then but thats shoshana and again, i respect her for being her because in the business, standing out is key and wether you like her or not, she sure as hell stands out from all the rest of the typical "broadway belters"."
"But that's just Shoshana"? See, that's the problem. She doesn't have the slightest clue of how to be musical or dramatic when singing a song. She has the vocal talent to hit the notes, but it ends there. If that's what's making her "unique," then that's a problem.
Mark, you can't really judge by illegal recordings. That's a bit unfair. Like I said, she has her sour notes (there are certain vowel sounds that don't come out too great for her) and she DOES sound a little juvenile at some parts. But if that's SCREAMING? Well, I wish I had such a smooth vibrato when I screamed, lol. ANd it SURE it remarkable that someone could "scream" their way though songs eight times a week without losing their voice.
Like I said, one just can't call every voice that's not their taste "screaming."
hmmm...I dont really agree with that statement.
listen to the girl sing "home" and then tell me there is no emotional connection.
but everyone is entitled to their own, so i respect that.
