Eden admits to being a 'screamer'

In Playbill.com's Diva Talk this week.
Q: What shows?
Espinosa: I did Maria in West Side Story and Laurie in Oklahoma! [Laughs.] No one really knows my soprano side — they just think I’m a screamer! But I was a soprano first.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Most people who play Fantine are older, and I'll have another chance to do it hopefully. It's an amazing role, and I really hope one day I get to sink my teeth into those 45 minutes. [Laughs.]
Hahaha. That was a cute interview.

I didn't sing one song then die....and all my costumes weren't so gritty."

It's called money.....or lack there of in terms of LesMiz's offer...

Well, even if it wasn't what she had been getting for Wicked, she should have put her ego aside in order to star in Les friggin Miz on friggin Broadway! Besides, whatever they offered her I'm sure it was more than she would have made doing any regional theater production.
But I'm going to assume that Ms. Espinosa is NOT an idiot and had a more legitimate reason for turning down such a great opportunity.

Elaborate, please?
Not being snarky, I just haven't noticed any snob-vibes coming from her :) of course the last interview I saw was her "ask a star" on broadway.com.

Uhm, No.
She was offered Wicked in LA (Her hometown) which is planning on running for 2-3 years as opposed to Le Miz which offered up a 6 month contract.
She's already done NY. The smartest thing to do is to come to LA and star in a hit show so that the casting directors can see her.
It's called show BUSINESS.

"Q: I know you had been offered the role of Fantine in the Les Miz revival. Was it difficult to choose the L.A. company of Wicked over that?
Espinosa: Actually, the offer for the L.A. company of Wicked came in later, so it wasn't a deciding [factor] between the two jobs. I knew it was a possibility, but it wasn't [definite]. Les Miz is my dream show — it still is to this day. To be offered Fantine, a role that I wasn't even originally going in for — I was going in for Eponine and Cosette. Then, at that moment [I was asked], "Do you know 'I Dreamed a Dream'? We want to hear your Fantine." I cried when they called me and told me I got it.
Q: Why didn't you end up doing the role?
Espinosa: It just didn't work out. It was a hard [decision], but I just feel you learn more about yourself every day, and I figure I'm 28. Most people who play Fantine are older, and I'll have another chance to do it hopefully. It's an amazing role, and I really hope one day I get to sink my teeth into those 45 minutes. [Laughs.]"
BroomstickBoy-
I think what really rubs me the wrong way is sort of the undertones I get from those two answers. She calls Les Miz her dream show, but never explains why she chose not to do it. Which could be for personal reasons... but then she says, "I really hope one day I can sink my teeth into those 45 minutes" and laughs... and it just seems to me like she's really snubbing the role, saying it's not big enough for her. I could be wrong. We can't hear her tone and we don't REALLY know why she turned it down. But there are rumors that she wasn't offered enough money... I mean, why did it just "not work out" exactly? And the fact that she cried when she got the role. For some reason, I just get the feeling she cried because she didn't get her way. Again, I could be wrong. But I just am under the impression that because she didn't get what she wanted, she wouldn't take anything. And part of me is like, who do you think you are? I feel like the attention she has gotten for playing Elphaba may have gone to her head. I can see how that would happen- with thousands of young girls obsessed with you just for standing by in Idina Menzel's part, I could see how someone would build up a LOT of confidence right away- to almost a dangerous extent.
Anyway, that's just the impression I am under. I realize that I am making some assumptions, but those two answers just don't give me a very good vibe.

um, i'm pretty sure that Eden is saying she would love to play Fantine one day, it just didn't work out... She CRIED when she was offered it..
even if she is a big snob, i'm sure she wouldn't blatantly show it in an interview. she wants to be in LA because her family lives there AND people are gonna see herr!! Hello?? Record Deal!

Posted: 12/6/06 at 9:52amBella, I think you are making some large assumptions. About the 45 minutes thing, Fantine is a classic role even though it it small.

Like a poster above said, it is show BUSINESS. You don't take a part because you want to play it. You take a part for a list of reasons -- commercial being high on the list.
As soon as you take a part for less money, producers start to realize you'll work for less money, and all of a sudden, you're back to scale. It's just not a good business decision -- especially given how well she's doing right now. LA Wicked was the superior choice.
#17re: Eden admits to being a 'screamer'
Posted: 12/6/06 at 11:48amYeah, but again, the offer for Wicked in L.A. came AFTER she had already turned down Fantine.

Posted: 12/6/06 at 2:36pmI am butting into this debate. But I for one did not find her attitude SNOBBY when reading this article. The way I read it seemed as though she thought she was too young for the role, and it turned out as a great decision for her since she is back in her hometown and doing the blockbuster musical Wicked. And after seeing Eden Live, she has more star quality as opposed to a feature role, just my opinion before you all jump on me :)

Thank you Touch Me,
And I also have to say that the title of this thread is WRONG. She said that people think she's a screamer. That's it. I don't see her saying, 'yes, I scream.'

Posted: 12/6/06 at 10:19pmIt's a pricetag, of sorts. i.e. I'll work for $4,500/week. And if a producer comes to you with a project and says, "I'll offer $3000/wk", they don't meet your quote.

I have heard stories over the years of actors and actresses being offered parts in Les Miserabls that didn't pay what they wanted. But, being that it was Les Miserables and its such a well known show and it was something they wanted to be a part of. They did it anyway. Also, in terms of record deals ect for Broadway actors. The chances of you getting noticed in NYC are about the same as you getting noticed in LA. NYC is probaly just as big an entertainment town as LA. But, instead of film we do theatre.
Also, I wish I could soon hear Eden's soprano voice just out of curisoity.

Posted: 12/6/06 at 11:08pmEden wants the regular paycheck of TV. And she can probably scream her way through Wicked with her eyes closed and one hand tied behind her back. LA it is.
