After cutting himself loose from the big-screen remake of Footloose, could Zac Efron be eyeing the Rock of Ages movie? According to the New York Daily News, the High School Musical alum is rumored to be up for the lead in a feature film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical—and he’s supposedly competing with Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal.
The Oscar-nominated Gyllenhaal is already attached to another movie musical; he’s reportedly playing Joe Hardy opposite Jim Carrey’s Devil in Craig Zadan and Neil Meron’s Damn Yankees remake. Patrick Wilson’s name has also been bandied about for the role of Stacee Jaxx, currently played by James Carpinello. (Efron and Gyllenhaal would presumably be in line to play the hero Drew, created by Tony nominee Constantine Maroulis.)
The ROA movie will be helmed by the musical’s librettist, Chris D’Arienzo, who directed the upcoming film Barry Munday, starring Wilson.

don't really know if Efron would be good for this, let alone if he would do it, but any chance to see him on screen, go for it!
Efron would be great as the 'mo!
i honestly think constantine maroulis is the only principal that could actually be in the movie. I really don't think efron or gyllenhaal could pull it off. Maggie Gyllenhaal as Regina could be amusing though.
Why not just cast Maroulis? He's known around the country for Idol, and he can actually sing.
I dunno...this just seems like someone has thought 'Hmm, these two could work in this movie' and gone with it, and there's no truth to it at all.
Sure they could have been approached or thought of at least, but I doubt either would do it. They don't need to.
Zac Efron wants to get away from this kiddy musical image he's gotten himself into, and if he were to do another musical I highly doubt he'd do something like this...
As for Jake Gyllenhaal...its more likely, but is he not doing Damn Yankees? Most Hollywood actors/actresses view a movie musical as a one time thing, twice at a push.
Isn't Zac Efron too young for this sort of thing?
and too... Zac Efron-y?
They are not right for this role. Ever. Just cast Constantine. Duh.
Foster, you're right, Zac would be better as the "not-gay" German kid. That would certainly change his image. Or not...

Sounds like producers drumming up interest by tossing around names...
Between this and DAMN YANKEES, Jake Gyllenhaal should just come out of the closet already :)
...didn't Efron drop "Footloose" a few months ago because he wanted to "get away from musical movies"?
I think Efron would make a great Franz.
