After taking some advice from others on this board, I watched the DVD of Into the Woods. Let me just say, I enjoyed it so much better than listening to the CD. Everything makes so much more sense. I love how Sondheim used fairy tales as a metaphor for life. Some things that I didnt like was the character of the mysterious man. I didnt understand what purpose he served in the musical. The song "No one is alone", although not ment to be a sad song, moved me to tears. It reminded me so much of my mother. Watching the DVD I was able to connect personally to the musical. Wonderful show!

I have owned this DVD for about 4 or 5 years. It is an excellent DVD and an excellent show. I think it is pretty ovious though what role the mysterious man plays in the show.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Now you can try Sweeney Todd!
Glad you enjoyed it! The thing with many Sondheim musicals is it can often take several listens or view before you appreciate it. So it's good to give things another chance.
I agree, you should look into Sweeney Todd. It's amazing.
The Mysterious Man has to be there as the Baker's father so you can see the Baker following in his footsteps and making the same mistakes until he turns his life around and decides to stay with his child. I really think you need him there most for the parallels between him and the Baker.

It is perfection.
I watch it every night while I'm going to sleep.
That DVD is so incredible...
Sometimes I feel I should bow down to it or something.
I knew you would at least appreciate it. I am so glad you enjoyed it. Into the Woods is really a genius musical. The Mysterious Man is a character the propels the characters to make choices, but is also there as the father of the baker, and real guide for a man who seems disatisved and lost.
I'm glad you liked it.
:)
I am very glad that you watched the DVD (especially after getting bashed for your review of the OCR CD... SOme people would have been so put off they might have turned off on the show completely.) I am glad you enjoyed and "got" the show. (It's even better live.)
Now your "homework assignment" should you choose to take the challenge: Tell us what you think ITW does better than WICKED and what WICKED dos better than ITW. I will be interested in your comments.
(The rest of you: Please, NO HELPING!!! I want to hear Elphaba's thoughts without being prejudiced by other comments. Thanks!)
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Glad that you enjoyed the DVD! You review was well thought out, and you expressed your opinions without bashing. Good job, girl!
