Actually no - I take that back - I thought she was AMAZING in THE WILD PARTY. That's definitely the only thing she's been good in. She was terrible in NINE, it made me want to cry.

I think she's a fun "personality," but a singer she is not. I saw her in the tour of CINDERELLA, and listening to her attempt that song Whitney Houston sang at the end of the TV movie version ("There's Music In You," I believe it was called) was painful.

There's not enough time (and I don't have the strength) to lay out the dozens of brilliant performances from Eartha Kitt over the last 60 years. She's a genius and a treasure and has more than earned her legend. And beyond her acting and musical gifts, her decades of work in the civil rights and anti-war movements from the 50s through the 70s (that actually got her blacklisted from working in the US for more than a decade) should make anyone foolish and and ignorant enough to try and degrade her feel VERY ashamed (not to mention that it makes you look incredibly stupid).

I have to agree with Margo - Ms. Kitt has been magnificent on more than one occassion. Orson Welles considered her the "most beautiful woman in the world" in their heyday. I first became aware of her as she was coming out of the blacklist. She sang "All By Myself" on one of Tom Snyder's show back in the 70's and I've never forgotten it. I saw her as the replacement Carlotta in London's FOLLIES and, well, the show stopped and the audience stood and cheered at the end of I'm Still Here. She was also pretty kick-ass as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill (do I recall the title correctly)in an extended run in Chicago a few years back.

Eartha is a beautifully talented and gifted performer. Why they even TRIED to use the script and songs from the Disney/Houston version of Cinderella is beyond me. They screwed that show up so royally by trying to up-date it. It should have been left exactly as it was when Lesley Ann Warren did it on TV in the 60s - that was a terrific, heartfelt production which was touching and beautiful.

With all due respect....I'm not disputing Miss Kitt's contributions to the entertainment world. But believe me when I say, she was not up to the vocal demands of that particular song...at least, not the night I saw it.

I was impressed by how limber she still was for her age. She dropped into several deep plies during Cinderella, much to the delight of the audience.

I was strictly talking about what I have seen her in onstage. I wasn't talking about the civil rights movement and all the extraordinary things she has done as a person - most of which I didn't even know about.

But me saying that i'm not impressed by her talents doesn't dispute her amazing history, they're two entirely different things. An informed, educated opinion is far more valuable and important than opinions based on 'Well...that's how I feel and so that's all that needs to be said.' This board and the world would be a much better place when people realize that, no, not all opinions are created equal. Mr. Babcock, knowledge is power.
