Ughh Emmy Rossum definitely canNOT act. She was terrible in Phantom, she gave absolutely no depth to the role. You can say it was the material, however I beg to differ. There are plenty of actresses out there who could have given Christine a characteristic other than "clueless". (Oh my gawd! That's like the Phantom of the Opera! In my mirror! *insert signature deer-in-headlights stare*)
Furthermore her singing was less than brilliant. I know mannnnny singers who are MUCH better than her... And my school doesn't even have a music program for which you have to audition. Let's be honest, folks. Her voice was totally uneven and not focused at all. YES, she was 16. However, if at 16 she cannot perform up to standards in the role, then she should not be cast. Period.
Phantom of the Opera is one of my all time favs. in musical theatre, I'm not even gonna lie. (I know, I can hear you guys rolling your eyes... whatever). However, with my limited musical background (I am a decent singer but no Kristin Chenoweth or anything) *I* can tell flat out that she needs a lot of training. Furthermore, I waited with baited breath for that premiere... I was so excited I could barely contain myself... and I was totally and utterly disappointed. That's saying something, folks. It doesn't take much to please this girl. I loooove Wicked, think that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is brilliant, in fact I even love Rodgers & Hammerstein. However I thought that it was a total mistake to cast Emmy and don't even get me started on Gerard.
Hmph.
However, in summary, my thoughts are that Emmy Rossum was totally unqualified and there are many, many other qualified actresses who could have done a better job. For Christ's sake, Julie Cooper from the OC is a trained coloratura soprano... I'd rather have seen her in all of her plastic surgery glory as Christine... if you need to put a "famous" or "hollywood" star in the role !!
