I was looking at Entertainment Weekly's website a moment ago and one of their headlines was a behind the scenes video of the Off-Broadway cast of 'Carrie' recording the cast album. Here is the video:

lol whut...they censored "F*CKing bull****" to "freakin bull****" (unless they changed that lyric from previews..I still preferred the "will people think I'm gay" or whatever it was, lyric..). Are they also taking the tempo a tiny bit faster than they did during the show? Regardless, a great example of a song they successfully 'fixed'...

Posted: 9/14/12 at 1:20pmChristy Altomare sounds like she's maybe overacting a touch on the recording... We'll see, she was absolutely fabulous in the show. Her voice is gorgeous.

Posted: 9/14/12 at 2:23pmI wonder if they put the big ending of "The World According to Chris" on for the recording, I hated when they axed it. I really like Jeanna de Waal's voice on that last note when I saw it.

Whereas Marin and Molly seem to be under-acting on the recording.

I really, really like what I hear even if I wish they'd tone down the tired music video/MTV style/aesthetic that doesn't gel with musical theatre. It causes a song like this to come across monotonous since the actors/singers limit their potential in keeping with the style. Musical theatre is most effective when substance is at the forefront and style is there to enhance, compliment, or suggest. It shouldn't be what one remembers most and definitely not limit the actors to a crinkle on the forehead to denote a wide variety of angst.
I suppose that's part of the reason it wasn't as effective as it should have been. The retooling is very good but it's secondary to the style which is evident in everything, even the blocking/choreography. One comes away with the impression rather than the story it wants to tell.
I know it seems as if I dislike it mostly. Far from it. I'm really impressed with everything including the revised orchestration.

Just checked the status of my order. It is still "awaiting shipment."

Posted: 9/15/12 at 11:18pm^They're shipping early this week. Those who say they received a shipping notice likely confused it with the order confirmation.

Thanks CATS. When I ordered, I think it said shipment could start as early as 9/14/12. However, since I preordered on 9/2/12, I figured I wouldn't be at the top of the list.
I've got an assortment of CDs coming my way this month, and I'm excited about all of them. I can't wait for my mailbox to have little surprises in the shapes of Dave Matthews Band's AWAY FROM THE WORLD, CARRIE, and my authorgrpahed JEKYLL & HYDE 2012 Concept Album!
Now if only TRIASSIC PARQ's release date would be confirmed. It's slated for this month, but time is running out. It's been recorded and I can't wait to get my hands on that album!

What I think MyOhMy is trying to say is that musical theatre must admit that it is not any genre of music outside of musical theatre. It can be jazz or opera inflected or pop-rock inspired, but the harder it tries to be "real music" and not "show music" the more it cripples its potential as "show music" that works really and honestly within its context.
I'm not saying I agree or disagree- just trying to continue the discussion that we've started.

I don't think there is such a genre as 'musical theatre', or 'show music', or that there is such a thing as 'real music' either. This reminds me of that strange argument this guy tried to make a few months ago on his blog.
Musical Theatre entails using music and lyrics to tell a story, and there is not one way to do that. How exactly could they make the music sound more 'musical theatre'? I don't know if the phrase (musical theatre) actually has any meaning in terms of a musical style..

I think the argument here is that they're trying harder to make the music "sound real and current and popular" than trying to let the music express what it is saying and have the singers express it.
I think the song sounds great, in my own personal opinion. But this argument keeps coming back again and again of style versus substance.

(How would you 'let the music express what it is saying' and have the 'singers express it'? I feel those are quite vague concepts...and the style is part of the music, how do you separate the two? I know I'm being relentless, I just don't think the argument about this issue is very clear).

I just realised that Marin's EVE WAS WEAK has been transposed on the recording up a semi-tone than from during the show (in previews, at least), for the first part of the song. Now it's (just?) a tone below Buckley's keys. Here are some clips comparing how Marin sung EVE WAS WEAK at this particular performance in previews (early February) versus the recording. I liked how she shouted at the beginning of the song in the show more so than on the recording. The interpretation of the song does not really change between the recordings. I also included the ending of Buckley's "EVE WAS WEAK" because her "Father take her" lines are scary.
