Erin Dilly's Final Performance

Posted: 12/10/05 at 4:21pmI hope the director/stage manager/whoever doesn't try to stop them from ad-libbing, these actors are especially great at it. And, it's closing anyway, is a harmless joke here and there really going to hurt the show? If anything, it makes it better!

The thing is, a really talented actress wouldn't let Raul get away with "being along for the ride". They would constantly be challenging each other. The way he is, he makes her stay on her toes. She should do the same for him.
And sometimes you just have those days where everything seems to go wrong. So all you can do is f*ck it. That's the beauty of live theatre.

Posted: 12/10/05 at 4:45pmShe does keep him on his toes. What I personally meant when I said he's along for the ride is that when you watch the show that's how you feel about the show. That they (the actors) as well as the audience are all just along for the ride. I think she is constantly challenging him. She show is SO different with out here there. HE is so different with her there. But that's my opinion.

I've only ever seen the two of them together. Actually, I've only ever seen the original broadway cast in it's entirety. But I didn't feel that way. I felt like she would just brush off some of the things he would do. Either ignore them or not react to them at all. And there was always way too much flailing of the arms from her part. In what ways do you think she kept him on his toes?
Of course the show is different. You have different actors that are going to have different objectives, and higher or lower stakes. He's worked with Erin since the beginning. They've probably talked alot about their two characters in relation to each other and the story. Understudies get very little rehearsal time and don't have that luxery.

'cause I'm not gonna lie, I've seen him totally phone in on Chitty. But, it's also possible that some of the stuff he does is so off-the-wall that Erin didn't know what to do with it until later, when they really seemed more used to each other.
I've found the understudies to play less depth to their characters, but I almost like that *better* in a weird way. Perhaps it's just some sort of clashing of two very strong actor personalities -- they're both so interpretive of really bland roles that it doesn't fly, no pun intended.

And I also don't think it's fair to accuse Raul of laziness. He has a job to do, some days he may be more of a smart ass than others. But people are used to him giving a level of 150 percent of whetever he does. And perhaps he's not feeling up to working so damn hard for the both of them and only gives 100 percent. If she isn't doing her job, it makes him have to work harder for the both of them. And that can be exhausting.
I am NOT saying Raul is a perfect human being who does everything right and never makes mistakes. But he IS the hardest working actor I have ever met in my life and I would never think of him as lazy. On Raul's laziest of days, he is still working harder than most of the average people.

You know I love him to death, but I've seen him look completely and totally bored. I never expected him to be one to let it show, but I was really disappointed.

Posted: 12/10/05 at 5:03pmI believe that both of them have grown a lot and become more comfortable and found their characters together since the beginning. I think it's a different show then it was.

Posted: 12/10/05 at 5:07pmI agree; my mom saw it with me at the end of previews and ridiculed me for MONTHS because I actually enjoyed it. I made her come back with me in early September, and she said it was truly like a different show. She loved it.

Posted: 12/10/05 at 5:11pmGranted, three months is a long time since I've seen the show. But I still felt back in September that they had A LOT of things working against them. I don't feel like they compliment each other. And I'm not anti-Erin Dilly. I'd see her in other musicals. Basically my point is I won't be seeing her in a play anytime soon.
