Personally I've always seen the play as so surreal, with so many questions about what in George and Martha's life is real, that I don't see why Nick has to be blond and blue-eyed. I've always read that Nick and Honey's presence is to be questioned as much as anything else George and Martha do. But maybe I'm just reading the play all wrong.

well his lawn WAS impeccably manicured.
Virginia Woolf is pretty straightforward, especially compared to the ludicrous depths of later Albee. So yes, all four characters are real.
