Hi Friends,
We are trying to decide whether to spend a huge amount of money on going to see Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway in June with my 14 year old daughter. (Timely).. We are huge fans of the show and of Pasek and Paul. The quandary is that as I was about to "bite the bullet" -- the press release came out that the tour will start in MY city of Denver in Fall, 2018. I know it will be a loss to miss the excitement of Broadway and especially Ben Platt. However, I imagine the touring company will also be amazing. Anyone want to weigh in? (It's a silly problem to have, I know) --
Spend the money. Ben Platt's performance is one for the ages, and is the best thing about the show, in my opinion.
I'm sure the cast that opens the tour will be top-notch, but if you're leaning towards going and won't break the bank doing so, it's well worth it to see the original cast. Ben Platt's performance is worth the trip alone.

Personally, I wouldn't miss Ben Platt, if you can afford the tickets. Waiting in the cancellation line would eat up precious vacation time, but it would be cheaper than buying the premium tickets that are left.

You need to see it with Ben Platt, the show could easily fall apart with a weaker lead performance.
Like what others have said, you can't miss Ben, his performance is just beyond amazing. Also Rachel Bay Jones is so powerful, you really can't miss them!!
Saw the show for the first time last night. I can't imagine them finding an actor who will rival the performance being given by Ben Platt. Phenomenal performance! Don't know how he's able to do it 8 times a week. If it isn't going to bankrupt you, do not miss seeing Ben Platt is this show!
ETA: If he doesn't win the Tony for this performance, I'm never watching the show again!

Thanks for saving me a seat!

Ben Platt is what makes the show for me.
Thanks for the news about the tour. I wish I could see Platt in the Broadway production, but I simply can't afford it, so a tour's better than nothing. Hopefully they'll get someone good for the tour -- it won't be the same, but I'm sure it'll still be enjoyable.

I find that no matter how good the national tour may be, very very rarely is it as good as the original production on Broadway. See it at the Music Box which is such an intimate theater and it will be an amazing experience. I live in LA and both touring houses here are enormous and the shows simply get lost no matter how good the tour may be...
If the show falls apart without Platt, then probably it's not s good show after all. And that's unfortunate!
Not that my opinion matter, but I kind of feel like they're gonna send Ben out on tour. Just a hunch.

Anything is possible, I suppose, but the OP should not plan on seeing Platt on tour. I assume he finishes his commitment to the show on Broadway and then moves on. He will have many offers and probably wants a break. The odds of Platt going on tour is basically zero.

OK Friends. I am going to do it based on your wonderful New Yorkers. So, I found Mezzanine Center G for about 320 each. Anyone know about those seats?

Ditto. There's nothing like seeing the OBC and Ben Platt us amazing.

I'm not usually one to think "oh you HAVE to see the original cast!" with a lot of shows, and I have seen some incredible touring versions of Broadway hits, but seriously, spend the money to go see Ben Platt in the lead. He is worth the money in this role. It is a wonderful show and I think the tour will likely be great, but Ben Platt lives and breathes Evan, and his acting (not to mention his incredible pipes) is what really raises his performance above so many other current Broadway musical leads, IMO. Don't miss him in this part. His will be VERY hard shoes to fill when touring time comes...

Jan,
Anything in the middle is fine for the Music Box, which is a small theatre. I have never sat in the mezzanine, but I have heard positive things about seats there.
I sat at Mezz side and my view was perfect. I got a ticket on Telecharge two days before the show (until then, the show was sold out so I assume it was released by the house), I paid the regular price.
I liked the show and thought Ben was great but I wasn't impressed as others. I also think the show will be fine even after OBC would be gone. Saying that the show will fall apart after Ben left would be like suggesting actually the show isn't that good, only the performance is good.

Hmm are you going to see before Tony Awards? If not, it could be a gamble because I don't want you to spend that much money and not seeing Ben. I don't think he misses a performance much but it's a taxing role and he'll be in the show for sure until Tony Awards but after that, he may take a break?

Oiy! That IS a gamble. Tony's are Sunday and we are thinking of going that Tues. .. I can't imagine Ben wont be back in theater that night. By the way, Michael Greif is directing the tour which opens in Denver so I imagine the production will be very strong.
Ben Platt's performance is moving and something I have not seen in a lead actor in years. It is not to be missed.
I sat at center mezzanine, G110. That was a great seat, which I got from StubHub. The Music Box is a small theater. I would have to say that very few seats would be undesirable. Besides, most of the action takes place center stage.
Still, if you are spending a lot of money to see the show including travel costs, you'd want to make sure that Ben Platt is actually performing the day you are going.

Well some of us believe that. I wouldn't say ONLY Ben's performance is good and nothing else but it's easily the best thing about the show IMO and the character could very easily become a lot less likeable/understandable with a less capable actor, which would ruin the effect of the entire show, even for those that are fans.

I don't think Tuesday 6/13 will be a gamble at all. My assumption is that he'll win the Tony, so it's doubtful that he'll miss shows that following week, and any vacation he takes will need to be announced well in advance.

We sat Left Mezzanine row L (seats closest to centre aisle) and still had a perfect view of the stage. Mind you, I like being closer where you can see their facial expressions perfectly, etc, but I was just happy to get tickets. I did manage to get the tickets 3 days before the show (at much lower price) but of course is a gamble and probably harder as it gets closer and closer to Tonys. As others said, the theatre is small and could see well. So those seats are even closer. It's pretty crazy how pricey these seats can be.
