I didn't cry, but Wicked's overture gave me chills. I never knew dissonance could be quite that harmonic.
Gypsy's overture gives me chills as well. Phew.

Posted: 6/24/05 at 8:45pmBelieve it or not, the first time I saw Tommy, I was crying hyserically during the Overture. I had waited so long to see this, and when it finally came to my home town, the excitement just got me emotional as soon as the chords hit. I was FINALLY seeing this. I cried throughout the whole first twenty minutes of the show.

Posted: 6/24/05 at 8:49pmThe original production of HELLO, DOLLY! didn't have an overture. When one was added for the first revival I found tears of happiness in my eyes when the title song was played. Nowadays all I have to do is hear the downbeat and the tears start. (The last time the show was revived in NYC each tune that was played in the overture was greeted by enthusiastic applause!)

Posted: 6/24/05 at 8:50pmYep, the summer before AIDA closed. I saw it three times in the last few months, and cried at the beginning each time. The first simply because I was so happy to be back after a year and a half, and the second because it had finally hit me that I was actually going to have to say goodbye. The third time was the last performance. I cried through the whole show, it was pretty pathetic.

Posted: 6/24/05 at 9:03pmI honestly don't care what anyone thinks, but I cry at the Beauty and the Beast overture ever single time. That, and Gypsy.

Posted: 6/24/05 at 9:07pmSometimes fighting it. I don't pretend that it does not hit me during the overture. The hair on the back of my neck stands up and I usueally get the chills due to the intense anticipation. Yep, I guess you can call it a form of crying, butterflies and the thought of the people about to go on stage and what they are feeling as they hear it. There's nothing like it. Either in the audience or waiting to go on backstage.

I've cried before a show even started! You're all going to think I'm completely insane, but I was almost sobbing with joy when I got cancellation tickets to see The Producers last March. I had wanted to see the show so badly with Nathan and Matthew, and my mom waited 3 hours in line with me to try to get tickets. Right at 2pm, the ticket lady came out and said they had 2 tickets for us if we wanted them. Row G, right on the aisle - you couldn't have gotten better seats. I was literally shaking and crying all the way through the overture, finally pulling myself together right before the show actually started - what a sorry emotional girl I am!

Posted: 6/24/05 at 9:24pmI got misty-eyed during the overture (the Fanfare, I think they call it) of The Frogs. I was overwhelmed. Not only was I seeing a Broadway show, but I was seeing Roger Bart and Nathan Lane live.

Posted: 6/24/05 at 9:25pmI haven't cried from one, but there's a definite wave of emotion whenever the chords of Pinball Wizard start during the overture from Tommy...

Posted: 6/24/05 at 10:21pmWell, WICKED's overture amkes me shake because I'm so excited and having a panic atasck for the performners. But, when i saw GYPSY, which was when i was jsut getitng into theatre, the overture started and the audience lit up. I feel that that's the best song in the show and the best overure on broadway, though Wonderful Town's is fun as well...

Posted: 6/24/05 at 10:32pmNot as a result of the overture, but as a result of the lady in front of me....I was hysterical crying at Beauty and the Beast. She was a Japanese tourist probably in her 20's and she was all alone. When the orchestra played the first note she began to cry tears of joy and was just so enthralled during "Be Our Guest" which made me very happy. And she was waving to Belle during the curtain call....she was adorable, she made my night! lol

I felt like crying during the Chitty overture. I thought I was being prepped for an evening of torture...
I cried during the Porgy and Bess overture. Nothing beats hearing that music live! I was overwhelmed.

Posted: 6/24/05 at 10:53pmThe Light in the Piazza is the only show that's made me cry at all. I cried during the overture during the second, third, and fourth time seeing it b/c I knew what was coming. I even cried during the part where Margaret tries to tell Fabrizio what's wrong with Clara but then just says that she's a very special girl. Everyone else was laughing but I was crying. Forget about "love to me" and "fable", I was a mess!

Whew! I'm not the only one.
I cry thinking about West Side Story music. As soon as the strings come in with "Tonight", I'm out. I was a mess at my choir concert when I had to sing it.
Do you ever get teary when a show starts because you want to be up there so bad? I did that at Chicago and Les Mis. I get really into it.

Posted: 6/24/05 at 11:41pmYes! I cried during the overture when I saw the most recent national tour of "Peter Pan" with Cathy Rigby. "Peter Pan" was the first musical I was ever introduced to (I have the VHS of the Mary Martin special), and I had never seen an actual stage production of it. It was such a dream come true for me to actually see it, and a very emotional personal thing for me.
