this airs tonight.
I saw it at Signature years ago and thought it was outstanding. It's basically a love letter to the craft of songwriting. I'm curious to see how they cut it down to an hour though. It was a full show when I saw it.
Heidi Blickenstaff's "Sing Happy" is still one of the most amazing "out-of-context" performances of a song I've ever seen. And I've heard Kander say in interviews he thinks it is their hardest song to sing and get across.
The show when I saw it also had all new orchestrations. Looking forward to tonight even if it is a shorter watered-down version. Anyone else watching?

It was great. Too bad it was not the entire show.

I'm watching this now on pbs.org... favorite stuff so far has been Kate Baldwin's Cell Block monologue and Julia Murney and Heidi Blickenstaff playing mother & daughter on "The Apple Doesn't Fall."

I liked the arrangements and thought all six performers sang very well. But Baldwin needed to explain to the other ladies about choosing one gesture per song and making it count. It really isn't necessary to pantomime Fred Ebb's lyrics: they are quite clear.

Blickenstaff stands like a sailor. She could take a lesson from the other two ladies on standing in third.
She was the only weak spot for me. Her belt was fine, but there was something spotty in how she sounded when she tried to sing quietly.

According to the PBS website, these are the songs on the DVD that weren't included in the broadcast:
She's A Woman/Dressing Them Up from Kiss of the Spider Woman
Blue Crystal/Marry Me from The Rink
I Don't Care Much from Cabaret
Love and Love Alone from The Visit
The Money Tree from The Act/Maybe This Time from Cabaret
With these eight songs added, can anyone tell us if this is the complete show?

Based on these 8 songs, no reason to get the DVD. I would like to see a compilation of songs cut from various productions that have basically never been performed done as a concert. I love NY NY but can we hear something else rarely or never heard.

Just bought the DVD. Still doesn't include the whole concert (missing Heidi's incredible "Ring Them Bells", "Dear One", "Sara Lee", "City Lights", "Colored Lights", "All I Need Is/Yes", "A Certain Girl", "Boom Ditty Boom", "Razzle Dazzle", "How Lucky Can You Get", and "Show People"
, and doesn't include an option for watching it in the original order. So I'm kind of disappointed--how hard would it have been to throw the original show up without weird editing or anything? But I'm glad to get at least part of the show--I really enjoyed it when I saw it at the Kennedy Center.

Thank you for that info.
It's disappointing to hear how much was left out. ![]()
