Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances

Posted: 1/18/08 at 8:27amDidn't Kerry Butler do a workshop of Legally Blonde as Elle after LBB was attached or showed interest? I remember reading an interview somewhere of LBB or Butler talking about it, but I can't remember where/who/ it was. That could have caused some problems between them.

Also what's the story between Patti Lupone and AWL? I've only heard bits and pieces but not the full tale.
Patti was signed to do Sunset Boulevard in London and then bring the show to Broadway. She was replaced by Glenn Close, who had opened the American premiere in LA, for Broadway. My understanding of the story [as a big Patti fan] is that not only was she replaced, but it was done in a fashion that was...not very professional. If you listen to interviews where Patti talks about it, she basically had an emotional meltdown. She sued him for breach of contract, and they wound up settling out of court for a nice healthy sum.
that's not exactly the entire story, but it's the basic plotline.

"Hal Prince and Michael Bennett- It began durring Follies. Bennett had more to do since Follies had a lot of musical numbers and not so much book. Prince loved the book. Bennett hated the book. Bennett was dying for complete control whch he certainly got from Seesaw onward (though he always collaborated on choregraphy with Bob Avian and in the case of Dreamgirls, Michael Peters). Prince will constantly say he was friendly, if competetive with Bennett till the end. Out of pure egotism, I doubt Bennett would have said the same thing."
Well, that's only part of the story. Prince and Bennett were a couple since Company and they lasted until the out of town tryouts from Follies. It was in the lovey-dovey stage that Prince agreed to co-direct with Bennett.

Thank you for correcting me.

Posted: 1/18/08 at 2:03pm^ Yeah, but that lasted, like what, a minute?
re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances#58
Posted: 1/18/08 at 2:15pmActually, Sutton and Christian dated for five years before they got married. So even though the marriage is reportedly on the rocks after a year...they've been together a long time...
re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances#59
Posted: 1/18/08 at 2:19pmI was talking about the marriage itself.
re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances#60
Posted: 1/18/08 at 2:32pmActually, when people I knew (I won't call 'em friends) started calling me non-stop when they heard about the separation, one of them said that a rumor going around was that there was something going on between Christian and LBB. Naturally, I don't know if it's true, but people sure don't seem to like LBB, do they?

re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances#66
Posted: 1/18/08 at 4:29pmThere was an article that Sutton was with Roger Bart. Showmances for both partners I guess if that's true.

Yes, Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley are one of my favorite theater couples, too. Other couples that I didn't see mentioned (though I don't know if they necessarily met doing theater):
Felicity Huffman/William H. Macy
Rebecca Luker/Danny Burstein
Becky Ann Baker/Dylan Baker
Kelli O'Hara/Greg Naughton
Someone mentioned Zero Mostel and Jerome Robbins (I think). From what I've heard, Jerome Robbins was a very difficult man, so I'm thinking there were many "rivalries" there.
re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances#68
Posted: 1/18/08 at 5:12pmHe was so difficult that one time he was backing up on a stage giving notes and fell right off. No one bothered to warn him how close he was getting and nobody bothered to helph him back up.
re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances#69
Posted: 1/18/08 at 5:35pmI'd heard the Sutton and Roger Bart one, too. I think Sutton/Roger and Christian/Laura Bell were mentioned on the same thread...but that was a while ago. Nonetheless, I think it's sad. I liked them together. I think it's interesting that a couple can be together for so long and then when they get married it falls apart. They're certainly not the first to have that happen.

"I'm not sure if rivalry is the right word, but a pre-"Sex and the City" Evan Handler had a famous on-stage encounter with his co-star Nicol Williamson in "I Hate Hamlet" in the early 1990s. The incident occurred onstage during a performance, when Williamson yelled at Handler and nicked him with his sword (it was a sword-fight scene). Handler left the stage and quit the production in mid-performance."
Another incorrect entry in Wikipedia. The incident happened during the curtain call. Williamson negatively misinterpreted something he heard the innocent Handler say to a colleague while Nicol took his bow. Enraged, Williamson slapped him in full view of the cast and the audience.

I've never heard that version of the story. I don't know what it says in Wikipedia, but I was referring to the incident which occurred onstage during a scene following which Handler immediately quit the production. I found the following link as reported in the NY Times (I stand corrected that Nicol apparently did not nick Handler, but hit him with the sword. Guess my memory is a little off).

My favorite romances are Donna Murphy and Shawn Elliott, and Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.
I do admit that Andy Karl and Orfeh are one of the most attractive Broadway couple, I would so have a threesome with them.
I thought Laura Bland Bundy was trying to get a better reputation with LEGALLY BLONDE, guess not. Her lack of professionalism in WICKED was bad enough, and her lack of charisma or presence (not to mention the fact she has such a generic singing voice) in her current show makes me wonder how she keeps getting jobs on Broadway.

I suppose it's arguably Broadway romance, Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka get my vote, along with Jason and Marin.
Plus Mark Lambert and Victoria Mallory, Robert and Kim, and Charles Kimbrough and Beth Howland for the Sondheim couples

"Felicity Huffman/William H. Macy"
They're one of my favorite couples. From what I've seen they seem to compliment each other so well.
"Yeah and one of the past threads on here said that Sutton is dating Matthew Morrison."
I must have missed that thread. I'm guessing his engagement is off?
