re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances

"Plus, Hugh Panaro was married for a time to Tracy Shayne--they played Marius and Cosette opposite each other and they were both in Phantom together (I think he was playing Raoul then to her Christine)."

No, Hugh was never actually in Phantom with Tracy. He'd already left the role of Raoul before she took the part of Christine.

re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances

Back in the day:

Barbra (yes, her) and Sydney Chaplin had a pre-Broadway fling during the tumultous out-of-town tryouts of Funny Girl. The little fling ended when they got back into town and Barbra went back to husband Elliott Gould (who she met during Wholesale) and Chaplin went back to whoever.

Barbra had transition problems with Chaplin and his contract was bought out 6-8 months after opening.

Chaplin was replaced by Johnny Desmond who was happily occupied with both a wife and a girlfriend, and he and Barbra had a good professional relationship. He respected her smarts and she respected his showmanship.

Then Mimi Hines took over and she and Johnny did not get along at all. At one point she slugged Johnny--literally punched him in the kisser--during a blackout because he wouldn't follow her ad libs and went by what the writers had given them. He brought her up on charges at Equity and the charges stuck.

re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances

ok. Am I the only one who thinks that this Idina Kristin thing may not be true. By all means it MAY be true, but it seems that people are stating speculation as fact.

the idea that they beefed up Kristin's part because she is more popular than idina is flat false. Kristin's part was beefed up in the VERY beginning. Before Idina was even around to be popular or unpopular. Back when the show was in development and Elphaba was being played by Shoshana Bean.

and the idea that two Broadway vocalists would get into a screaming match backstage strikes me as obviously false. I have a Very hard time believing that two trained professionals would risk damage to thier vocal chords for a petty disagreement. In interviews Menzel has stated that she wasn't able to even speak loudly during the run for fear of straining her voice.

I'm not saying that it is not true...only that there has been no proof given.

Yeah, I agree.
In performances/interviews/pictures/backstage stuff they seemed to get along fine and really like each other. And during Kristin's last show ever (thanks to THAT site...) all the emotion and Idina ad-libbing stuff like "Stay with me. I'm gonna miss you." doesn't seem like it could be faked. I'm not saying they were BEST friends, but I think they got along fine.

I always thought that as well, Izzie.
One time, Patti LuPone punched me in the face...

It was awesome.

On the subject of Wicked, what about Norbert Leo Butz and Michelle feredereder (I have no idea how many re and ders there are) I believe they are/were married

re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances

Norbert and Michelle are married. Wicked has actually led to a lot of romances. Corinne and Manuel, Sebastian and Stephanie, and a couple more.

Also Izzie, Shoshana was not originally playing Elphaba. That was Stephanie J. Block.

That's a good point, but to be honest, I would not be surprised. It's theatre, things get over-dramatized onstage and off-stage.
I mean, Denzel Washington? Gun to my head..of course.

So is the Suttorle marriage over or not?

re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances

I think so... I don't think we know what's going on. Best couple, though. Ever. There are also rumours about Laura Bell/Christian, which I really don't like. You know..? Laura Bell can be a diva at times, and Christian's just really shy and private.
Rent comes off Broadway and High School Musical comes on. Something tells me there's a HUGE mistake....

Everyone loves to pit Patti and Bernadette against each other as rivals. But I've never heard of there being a real one between them.

re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances

ljay-
LuPone said one time she thought she was taking over the Merman roles, but after Bernie got Annie Get Your Gun AND Gypsy, she said it looked otherwise. I forget where I read that though, but it was a real interview.

The way I heard it re: LBB as the standby:
Chenoweth injured her neck again (or flared up the injury), and needed to take a weekend off. LBB flew off to LA with no notice. Which would have been fine had the other u/s (Melissa Fahn, maybe? PLEASE correct me if I am wrong here) not had a stroke. Chenoweth went on, and we got the viccodin performances.

re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances

^^^^^I think it was Melissa Bell Chait, the Glinda u/s who had a stroke.
Dean: Can I tell you something? Lorraine: That depends on what it is. Dean: I think you're really really pretty. Lorraine: (after a pause) Ok, you can tell me that.

re: Famous Broadway Rivalries/Romances

I'd never heard the LBB story. That's crazy.
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention...I'm the good cop, he's the bad cop.
