Fantine has tuberculosis?

The disease began to represent spiritual purity and temporal wealth, leading many young, upper-class women to purposefully pale their skin to achieve the consumptive appearance.
The 19th-century equivalent of "heroin chic."
EDIT: And CONAiries---what's not realistic about consumption in Les Miz?

Nothing what so ever, my post was more in comment to
"Also known as the "opera disease."
Everybody dies from singing the same song.
AND
when Nicole Kidman. had it, she could lip-sync AND do trapeze!

Fantine dies an easy death. Eponine takes a bullet to the chest, bleeds all over the Barricade, sings a ballad and dies in the arms of a man who won't return her love.
And a question I've always had: why do Fantine and Eponine become angels after they die and return to escort ValJean at the end of the show, but Gavroche who also died doesn't get to come back as an angel?

I've always questioned the "Eponine Angel ending" myself. Heck, she had nothing to do with Valjean's "salvation." Other than screaming at the theifs, she doesn't have a thing to do with Valjean. I always felt it should be the Bishop and Fantine that appear... after all, the Bishop is the one who essentially "saved" Valjean. I would suspect it had more to do with giving the audience the chance to hear the two powerhouse voices again.
Oh, and I've never made it through the book, so I thought Fantine died of Syphillis - which I always thought was a rampant killer back then - caused insanity. And by the death scene, Fantine is dillusional.

Except when Patti LuPone can't make it to the stage in time.

The question mark wasn't a context clue?

Almost every character in Les Mis died, so if they all came back as angels to escort Valjean that would be kind of overkill.
I don't get why Eponine is there, but I do love her and Fantine singing together.

Posted: 4/9/12 at 1:44pmI'm guessing they had some sort of Angel Idol in Heaven, and the two finalists got to come back at the end and sing the reprises.

Well, don't they all come back at the end? Once Eponine and Fantine lead Valjean to Heaven, they are joined/greeted by all the deceased (e.g. Enjolras, Gavroche, students) in a final rendition of "Do You Hear the People Sing?"
And I gather Eponine is there for Marius, if this picture is any indication. Fantine is reaching out toward her daughter, and Eponine is reaching out toward Marius, like they're sending good vibes or something.

Posted: 4/9/12 at 2:15pmWell, we know from Patti's autobiography that the part of Fantine was shaped based on when Patti showed up for rehearsals. So maybe Gavroche was out getting Eponine a Shandy when they were deciding which angels will return.
