The lighting for The Lord Of The Rings was amazing, especially at the end of Act I (spoilers?)
when Gandalf yells "You... shall not... pass" and slams his staff down... The whole stage goes crazy and begins to come up, and the lighting in the background turns red/orange and then confetti flies everywhere (people are more into catching the confetti as it comes at them than actually watching the stage).

Posted: 5/30/06 at 9:23pmI'll always remember the first time I saw Dreamgirls. As Jennifer Holliday belted "I Am Changing" the followspots slowly irised down onto just her face and when she got to the key-change, the followspots irised open revealing Jennifer in a different costume. The audience always went wild. I peed a little bit the first time I witnessed it.

"- THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: as the Phantom sings "You will curse the day..." at the end of act I and the angel statue he's standing on rises back up, lights go on inside the statue giving it a "demonic" look, as the light is seen only through the eyes and mouths of the statue's figures. "
So I'm not crazy!! I thought it was really cool the first time I saw it, but no one else I went with noticed it. And the second time I saw it, the lasers must have been broken or something, because it didn't happen. I thought I was just loosing my mind.

Posted: 5/30/06 at 9:55pmWell...I love in A Chorus Line when at the end of "I Hope I Get It" when all the dancers line up on the edge of the stage and on the last beat all the lights go out and each has a spotlight on them...at least the production I saw, dont know bout Broadway.

I loved the DRS "The More We Dance" sequence also. And the PIAZZA lighting with the light behind Clara. Aah, so beautiful.
However, the most unique lighting technique I've ever seen was during the 2003 GYPSY revival. After "Baby June and her Newsboys," June and the boys and Louise started dancing a really cool step that made it look like they were moving. Then, a bunch of strobe lights flickered on and off quickly. You could still see June and the others, but they seemed to be growing and growing until the lights finally stopped. Then, Dainty June and all the other dancers ended the number right about then, all grown up.
Now THAT was cool.
