I think lighting plays a great part in all the plays and musicals. I think it'll be more interesting if you list a specific moment from the show.
1) Les Miserables at the end of One Day More! when the lighting turns red, white, & blue to make it look like a French Flag
2) Cats during overture, when the cats turn on their eye lights (or whatever they're called)
3) Sweeney Todd, during Johanna (Act II) when the stage turns red
4) Hairspray, right when the spotlight lights up on Tracy during Good Morning Baltimore.
Any others you'd like to share?

Posted: 5/30/06 at 6:22pmThe lighting sequence in The More We Dance in DRS is my favorite. When everybody comes out for the dance break and the lights start going crazy is one of the coolest lighting sequences ever.

Pretty much all of The Light in the Piazza. Exquisite lighting.

I agree with Steven about Piazza.
I enjoy Princeton's nightmare sequence in Avenue Q, and then how it instantly goes back to the real world.

Ditto on THE PILLOWMAN. Truly great. Also, as much as I hated TARZAN, that moment with Jane and Tarzan above the canopy of trees was beautifully lit.

I've never really payed attention to the lighting before...hmmm.
I found Beauty and the Beast's lighting at the end incredibly annoying. I thought I was going to have a seizure.

- CHICAGO: the bright white light behind Velma as she rises on the stage as the overture turns into the opening bars of "All That Jazz"
- THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: as the Phantom sings "You will curse the day..." at the end of act I and the angel statue he's standing on rises back up, lights go on inside the statue giving it a "demonic" look, as the light is seen only through the eyes and mouths of the statue's figures.
- THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: the candles during the title number lighting the stage dimly.

The effects in THE MORE WE DANCE in DRS are great.
INTO THE WOODS rocked with it's lighting... especially after they were really "in" the woods.
I always loved the sunrise at the beginning of CIRCLE OF LIFE in THE LION KING.
Lights up on Velma for her entrance in CHICAGO.
DEFYING GRAVITY in WICKED is pretty great.
Haven't actually seen it, but I hear- and can tell from the clips- that THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA has some spectacular lighting.
Everything about SPAMALOT is fabulous, and the lighting - especially in KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE section and YOU WON'T SUCEED ON BROADWAY- is no exception.

1. When Chita sings A Boy Like That, the lighting just flipped to that great blue color.
2. Defying Gravity, stunning

THE PILLOWMAN - THis play was pretty much pereft, and the part in "The Write and the Writer's Brother" with the electrocution scared the s*** out of me!
And of course, SWEENEY with the train whistle, blood poouring, and red lighting, I was again, scared out of my wits.

Posted: 5/30/06 at 8:26pmWell, as a lighting designer, I get to do some really fun stuff, but my favorite bit of lighting likely comes form Ragtime. The end of the second act, when Coalhouse opens the doors to go outside, is probably the single most vivid lighting image I can remember.

All of Light In The Piazza
The moment in 'Dancing Through Life' in Wicked where all the little 'fairy' lights come on with the dance sequence. So pretty!

I have a few because i am a huge lighting whore
The Pillowmans lighting was awesome and really just set the mood and as others said the part during that story also freaked me out and i jumped soo hard.
Light in the Piazza was soo gorgeous to look at I almost started crying just by the lights.
Aida- I love the image of the washer women...it took my breath away as a kid when I saw it and it is an image taht I will never forget...beautiful.
Ravinia's Sunday in the Park... They had this huge blank canvas as a backdrop and they sort of had him working on it but at the end as they are singing sunday which was glorious enough on its own then they had on the very last big note two people pull down the sheet and you saw the painting all lit up and in full color....it was soo F**KING BEAUTIFUL and I just lost it crying and remember turning my head at intermission and seeing a bunch of people still just sitting there stunned and wiping away tears...i know it doesn't sound all that amazing but man was that powerful.

"You may have dramatic lighting!"
Haha, that line from "You Won't Succeed On Broadway" in Spamalot is just a fun little moment. And when the lights shine on the 'HAY!'
I also love the DRS "More We Dance" sequence.
And who can forget the rabbit-chasing scene in "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown"!?

Posted: 5/30/06 at 8:32pmOh yes, Wicked has some great moments as well. The way the poppy flowers are lit is beautiful. And lest we forget, Defying Gravity is pretty amazing.

The scene in PIAZZA where Clara is running and the entire back wall of the stage becomes a soft white and the entire stage is flooded in white. One of the most incredible lighting sequences I've ever seen.
The moon in CAROLINE OR CHANGE was also great.
And I loved WICKED's lighting esp. The Wizard and I and Defying Gravity (deserved the Tony over ASSASSINS imo).
