Overall what would you say your favorite recordings of a musical are? This is strictly based on the music of a show, not the quality of the show itself.
I'd love answers with explanations for your choices, if you'd like.
My choices would have to be:
Hair OBC
Jesus Christ Superstar OLC
Tick, Tick, Boom
Company (2007)

Sweeney Todd OBC (Cariou & Lansbury edition)--This is the greatest CD I own of any genre. It's a magnificent recording, and includes everything you would want from this show.
Caroline, or Change--practically the entire musical on 2 CD's. It's exactly as I remembered the show when I saw it. Just amazing performances all around. Their are no pauses between any of the songs, it is like one single piece. The only drawback is you can't listen to individual songs, because the cuts between songs are made at weird times (so you often lose the ends of some songs).
Evita--Two words: Lupone / Patinkin. Nuff said.
Rent--I think that the audio could be a little better, but it's great because it preserves almost the entire show.

I didn't get to see Grey Gardens, but I bought the cast recording and have yet to give it a good listen through. I should probably do that....

RENT, because it's also a lot of the entire show. Also I kinda like that the audio isn't perfect, it works for it. And I also like how there are some vocal slip-ups...its like you're there.
-Jeff Bowen's worst onstage line flub.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Chess concept recording
It’s the best the show has ever been. No full staging, concert, rewrite, whatever has ever compared to how brilliant the concept album is.
