Ok, you should only really read this post if you've seen spelling bee already unless you don't mind us ruining some of the humor (not storyline) for you... if you have seen it already or wish to proceed, please scroll down...
ok, what was your favorite commentary spoken by Lisa Howard or Jay Reiss during the show. my favorite was at the beginning when they first introduce Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre and they say "ms. schwartzandgrubenierre is the president of the Gay Straight Alliance at her elementary school." so funny. share your favorite commentaries...
Our extra spellers had good comments proceeding them. We had a Docter, so he was introduced with, "When Dr. SoandSo grows up, he wants to be a lawyer!" It was funny. We also had a girl come on with, "Her favourite show is "That's So Raven!" Then, before Pandemonium, when Jose Llana got his hard word, he retorted with, "That's So Raven over there just got 'Mexicans!'" And a boy, who looked suspiciously like a hobbit came on with, "He has proudly nicknamed himself 'Frodo!'
I love it!
Thanks for ruining it!
the extras in mine where funny one was a wonam wearing all pink and she said "To keep her from returning tummy acks she dresses as peptobizma" and the other younger girl said "she won the female harry potter look a like contest in her school" the girl did look like happy same hair cut and glasses.. her second anouce ment was "thats so Rraven" also..
when i saw the show, one of the extra spellers, was an older woman [maybe in her 50s] who was dressed in all black. the commentary on her was: dressed in all black, "name" considers herself a spelling ninja. it was sooo funny.

When I was a speller, there was a bald guy there and they said 'He's currently recovering from headlice' and a really tall guy and they said 'He has just went through his third growth spurt' and about me, they said 'As a child prodigy, she's currently writing an opera in brail' good memories.
When I saw the show over the summer, my review is around here somewhere, but there was this older woman who was dressed in a purple sweatsuit and Lisa, when introducing her to spell the first word, said "So-and-so is known as the Lilac Asssassssin! on the playground!" The audience went WILD!

OSG, when did you see the show? Because most of those are the same as the performance I saw.

Mr. Barfee has a rare mucous membrane disorder
When I saw the show for the second time, they picked an extremely well dressed young boy. He was in a suit and everything. When he went up to spell, they said: "_____ dresses to intimidate the other spellers." The second time he went up, they said, "______ gets hand-me-downs from his brother, who is Amish." It was really, really funny.

Hmm... the "spelling ninja" and the "opera in brail" sound like the same jokes I heard when I went. It looks like Bee is recycling their jokes.

One Song Glory, when were you a speller? I heard all of those jokes that you listed in your post - did I see you as a speller? I went to the Saturday matinee on August 27. One of the other audience member spellers at that performance got the introduction "when so-and-so grows up, she wants to be a baseball player in the 1930's" and it was hilarious, because she was wearing a weird outfit that really did look like an old-fashioned baseball uniform.

when I went, there was a little girl who had on a little dress that looked like a 1920's bathing suit, so lisa said "after the bee, *name* is going swimming in the 1920's" It was so funny because the little girl was so confused.

Jilani, yeah that was the show I was a speller at. It was really cool. You saw me? Awesome.
I saw it last night and the opera braille joke, the That's So Raven joke, and the head lice joke were all used. We also had a guy who with big glasses and a mustache and the comment was something like "So and so uses his special Groucho glasses to help him spell."
The little girl who they called up spelled the second word they gave her right, and you could tell that they were genuinely surprised - I don't remember the word, but I was thinking I didn't even know how to spell it - and I teach English!
Guy with long hair
"Mr So&So cried so much during his first haircut that his mother promised he'd never have to get another one again"
i saw it three times this summer and they definatly recycle jokes.
my favorite commentaries are always when olive's cell phone goes off and logainne does a little (usually) political rant at the mic.
"this is more fishy than the micheal bolten appoitment."

"Thanks for ruining it!"
...There was a spoiler warning...No need to get all snarky.
Anyways.
"When not spelling, soandso is busy buliding a life-sized map of the continent of Africa out of legos!"
And my favourite EVER...
"Rabbi Rosen wears black Hawaiian shirts to show that his synagogue is fun!...But not too fun."
OMG the Rabbi one is my absolute fave! I laughed so hard I almost choked on my tongue!
I have a question.. it's kinda off topic but I didn't want to start a new thread.... what exactly does Olive say when she talks about if you take all the silent letters from some words then you wont hear something... lol I can't remember at all so I thought I would ask!

"All I keep thinking about is...if you take the W from answer, and the H from ghost, and the extra A from aardvark, and the T from listen...you can keep on saying 'what?'...but nobody'll ever hear you 'cause it'll be silent."
I also didn't want to start a new thread but wanted to ask a question. I saw it last night (anyone else there? I was the one sitting RIGHT behind Panch in the white shirt), and when I was listening to the CD today, I didn't remember hearing "Why We Like Spelling" -- is it still in the show, or do I just not remember it??
PS -- Winning the lottery for that and sitting so close to the stage was one of the coolest Broadway experiences I've ever had, and (to paraphrase another current show...) I've seen a lot of shows. . .a LOT of shows
