This is going to sound very uncultured, as if I've never seen a Broadway show, but I could listen to "It's Hairspray" from the movie version over and over again, simply because of James Marsden's fabulous riff of "That's me."
Can I get a second, please?

Well, this isn't on a recording, but Lillias White's riff at the end of "Don't Rain On My Parade" is just so ama(h)zing.
Check it out on Youtube:

On a recording... Lillias White during the whole song, but especially the end of "The Oldest Profession" from The Life. Brilliant!

I love the riff on "Run Freedom Run" that was basically built into the song (from Urinetown) but he doesn't really do it on the cast recording.
You know, "I said freedom, I said free-ee-dom, I said freedo-o-o-o-o-m!"

It's not on a cast recording...yet (I heard rumors...but that's all they were), and it may not exactly be a riff in the classic sense, but Alice Ripley's series of "Rise..." in "Smash the Mirror" in The Who's Tommy out in Hollywood is friggin amazing.
Yes, I adore her anyway, but my jaw dropped when she did it this weekend. WOW!
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!

Tasha Thomas does several gorgeous ones in "The Feeling We Once Had" on the original recording of "The Wiz."
Consummate musicianship.

yeah i'll bring up Wicked... but Shoshana Bean is the only person i think that can riff the end "aaahh" of Defying Gravity... every other actress makes it sound like a freaking Tarzan yell... gets on my nerves... any actress can sing that song perfectly but that "aahh" kills me all the time....
oh and Simone can riff the sh** out of Gods Love Nubia....

How about that Kooman and Diamond song "Random Black Girl". That one has riffs up the WAZOO!!!
Any one of Lillias White's riffs in "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." If you like Holliday's or Hudson's, you'll love White's!

I have to second Lillias White in Dont Rain On My Parade...
and though it's not a riff, more of a lilt, i love Sherie's end of Good Times Back from the Little Mermaid

How about the entire song--"Oh Bless the Lord My Soul," sung by Shoshana Bean?

^ Friggin' LOVE that riff.
Lillias White at the end of I Am Changing:
No one's gonna stop me no-o-o-ow!
Emily Skinner singing "Send me flowers or a telegra-a-am"
What about Sara Ramirez's riffing during Find Your Grail

Posted: 6/27/08 at 12:23pmI second Lillias White's Dont Rain on My Parade! It is phenominal. My favorite would probably be the Touch Me Solo Georg does but I dont know if that counts as a Riff but the first time I heard that I was blown away. That being said Idina during the juggernaut is ridiculous. Especially when towards the end it goes from do the juggernaut do the juggernaut and then bam she starts belting all over the place.
