You want to see the pictures posted on the link for the Broadway board, I am sure Mama would short circuit if he saw those.

Well going on then post away.

The CATS sets always stun me:

UK Tour, 2003-2004
re: Favourite Sets

They made you feel so involved in the action, and it's one of the only sets I have felt it with.
The Mary Poppins UK Tour set is absolutely magical to watch, but unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of it =(

I totally dont remember that being the cas set, thought it far more minimal. Wow.

LOTR had an amazing set and made the ticket price worth it.

re: Favourite Sets

Excellent, loving the images and your comments!!!!!!

Keep it up.

I would post images of my only, the only reason I don't is, I do not know how to do it, tried copying and pasting off Goggle images, but this does not seem to work for me.

Any tips?

re: Favourite Sets

I don't have a clue haw to insert images, but I absolutely adored the set for Nicholas Nickleby, more so in Chichester than at the Gielgud. It was beautiful.

re: Favourite Sets

Please jaqs, from which show are your amazing pictures ?
#13

re: Favourite Sets

Jaqs' pictures are from Lord of the Rings. That show was amazing to look at. Just such a shame it simultaneously irritated me and bored me sh*tless to listen to it.

re: Favourite Sets

Yes such a shame the book and score didnt live up to the set, and costumes.

re: Favourite Sets

Thanks for the photo of the original London set for Cats - it's really interesting to see it in the context of the theatre rather than in the official production photographs.

The original London productions of both On The Twentieth Century and Windy City had fantastic sets, but the photos in the souvenir brochures do not do them justice and I can't find any online to upload.

The National's production of The Wind in the Willows also had a fantastic revolving set that made full use of the Olivier drum but again I can't find any photos.

I was also scared by the set of the Leicester Haymarket production of Sweeney Todd, more so than the massive set for the original London production (again no photos).

re: Favourite Sets

I quite agree with the previous comments with regards to Lord of the Rings' book, music and lyrics but I'd also add the set to the list of culprits for this shows failure.

For whilst it was spectacular to look at I thought it failed to help the show as at times it offered spectacular realistic solutions to the problems of putting the book on stage but then at other times they just said oh for this bit use your imagination.

As an audience member that's confusing so when it came to the mighty battle scenes and they just pointed to the back of the auditorium and said oh look there's an army of 50,000, I couldn't visualise it as I was just thinking well you managed to show me giant tree men etc is pointing at the back of the auditorium the best you can come up with?

I think with a show like LOTR the set should be a springboard to help the audiences imagination rather than try to answer the problems realistically as our imaginations have a much higher budget than any theatre production can afford.

(but I did like the end of act one when they blew bits of video tape into the audience to remind you that you would have been better off at home watching the films)

re: Favourite Sets

I can't think of many off the top of my head right now. But I just adored the set for Love's Labour's Lost in Stratford this year.

re: Favourite Sets

Those dangly vine things in the background? Wires with irregular geometric shapes cut out of translucent plastic in yellows, oranges, pinks, and greens. About 60-80 of those hung down over the stage. The floor was the beautiful mirrored effect used so well in Hamlet, with the brassy mirrored panels at the back of the stage, and that lovely tree dominated the upper part. In act five, Chinese lanterns were brought on and hung from some of the vines. It was a really pretty set from the side. When I went wandering in the interval and at the end, I got to see it from the front, and it was absolutely stunning. It's just a shame I can't find any better pictures. ;_;

The August: Osage County set just wowed me.
Ingenious in a realistic sort of way.
And the castle in Tanz Der Vampire. Actually pretty much all of the Tanz set is beautiful. That and Stage Entertainments Beauty & the Beast. That was stunning. Not any pics that show off the set for either of the latters, so enjoy yhe A:OC image :)

I love the August set. The house is so oppressive somehow; you can see through the windows at the back of the house, but around the edges is nothing but black. The house is all there is. All there is is in the house. Brilliant stuff. :3

I also love this one:

Amadeus at Wilton's Music Hall. A decaying old music hall with a backdrop of tarnished mirrors. Lovely stuff. :3

re: Favourite Sets

btw just to clarify...i love A Chrous Line.

re: Favourite Sets

One of the reasons that's a beautiful image is because it is difficult to tell where the music hall ends and the set begins.

re: Favourite Sets

Dreamgirls, 1981

This one needs a LOT of explaining because my iffy quality video of the Tony awards performance is rather lacking.

What we have here is one of Broadway's first fully automated sets: at the corners are four fully mobile and automated aluminium and plexiglass towers filled with lights capable of spinning 360 degrees. At the top are a bridge with lighting on the front and underneath as well as (I believe) a truss again packed with lights. Last, J-Hol is sitting on a motorised platform which was computer operated and relied on electromagnets to lock it into place during scenes. As a result, a more cinematic than film series of transitions shifted the action from cramped offices to giant stages, hotels, and everywhere in between instantly.

During the end of this scene (AIATYING), Effie delivers the final notes of her song and gets dragged back on the moving platform as the bridges are lifted out and the towers pull back, spin, and light up the Dreams (minus Effie) as a curtain drops in front of Effie before the act curtain drops on the Dreams.

J-Hol in front of two of the towers. You can see her standing right behind the track for the platform where the table and chairs are set.
