I think John Gallagher Jr. and Edward Hibbert are locks.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Jason Daniely was very impressive in Curtains, and "I Miss the Music" is such a gorgeous song. He will receive a nomination.

How can you say that when all of the shows this season (like "110 in the Shade") haven't even opened yet?

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

On the planet where he was amazing. Which is this one.

I didn't see Fame Become Me, but I doubt Brooks will be remembered. I'm sure he was quite good, but I think the show will have been closed too long for him to be remembered come Tony time.
Yankeefan's list sounds pretty good.

The only performers from FAME BECOMES ME that I see getting any *possible* Tony recognition are Martin Short and Capathia Jenkins -- which while unlikely, would be a very pleasant surprise.

I think Yankee's list sounds about right though I'd add Marc Kudisch as a spoiler for his fantastic and truly brilliant rendition of the title song in THE APPLE TREE, possibly replacing Danieley (though I really hope Danieley gets a nomination, he truly deserves it).
Does anyone think Matt Cavenaugh has a chance at a nod? I certainly adored his dual role in GREY GARDENS.

Yankee, maintain the John McMartin opinion, but I really don't think he is getting a little nod from the committee as a "good work" nomination.

I think Kudisch will have been long forgotten.

I'd give the nomination to Cavenaugh before McMartin, theatre veteran or no theatre veteran.

Mark my words, not only will McMartin get nominated, but he will win. And I would take out the kid from Spring Awakening and throw in Matt Cavenaugh. If any young actor deserves a nod in this category, it's him.

Try to judge on actor's performance's this from this year, not their past work.

Don't you see that as a slight upset though? I mean if McMartin wins that over Daniely and other probable favorites, everyone will know it was just done out of respect. And they have awards set aside for "respected" actors. Not saying he doesn't deserve a Tony, I think he does, but not for such a bit role in Grey Gardens.

John Gallagher Jr. gives an absolutely brilliant performance in Spring Awakening. He embodies the misfit Moritz so completely, he has made this character uniquely his own. Moritz' awkwardness, obsession and mood swings are captured so perfectly. His two key songs- And Then There Were None, and Don't Do Sadness, are sung with such passion and desperation; his delivery is just stunning. This remarkable achievement is deserving of both a nomination and the Tony.

If John McMartin wins over anyone it will be an absolute travesty. He may have been amazing in past shows, but his part in Grey Gardens is so small and unmemorable I don't even think he should get a nomination.

I have to say, I saw Spring Awakening last night (review to come for those interested), and I felt like a fish out of water. What is all the fuss about? Teen angst? Okay. It's well done and the kids are working hard, but all this talk about John Gallagher Jr. being a revelation, I didn't really feel it. He certainly was solid, as was the rest of the cast, but this annointing seems a little crazy to me. Although the critics did gush all over this show, I'm sure he will get nominated, but win? Well, maybe I guess.
I found Mr. Hibbert to be funny and a nice relief in Curtains, and I've said before that I think John McMartin will probably get nominated as a matter of respect due to his continued solid performances over the years. I found him underused in Grey Gardens and not all that amazing- SOLID, absolutely. But the performance didn't jump off the stage for me. And while Matt Cavenaugh did a respectable job as well, award worthy? We'll see I guess.
I know I will be applauded by some and raked over the coals by other for this next statement (I'm getting used to it!), but I wouldn't count out some of the supporting actors in Pirate Queen. I know some of you think they are playing one dimensional characters, but I think (and this could be because I've seen the progression from Chicago to NYC) that Marcus Chait and William Youmans especially are giving very interesting performances (that could get lost in the "spectacle" of the show). And the audience loves Jeff McCarthy. I know there isn't a lot of love given to this show around here, but there is some very good work being done on that stage, whatever you think of the show.
It should be an interesting category for sure.
I hadn't thought about Brooks. And didn't see Kudish, but he's been nominated before right?

I feel like we've had this conversation before...am I just crazy?
But ugh, if John McMartin wins for his role in Grey Gardens...I mean he's a great performer, but does nothing in the show.
Matt Cavanaugh deserves a nomination more than McMartin, though I don't think he honestly deserves to win. The show is all about Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson, and he gets lost in the shadow.
I personally thought John Gallagher was fantastic in Spring Awakening, definitely the highlight of the show. I think he'll be nominated for sure, and has a good chance of winning.
Didn't think Marc Kudisch was all that great in The Apple Tree. I love his voice in general, but he didn't make a huge impact on me in the show.
Didn't see Fame Becomes Me, but that was sooooo long ago that I feel like performances will have been forgotten about come Tony time.
I have not yet seen Curtains, but if Jason Danieley is as great as everyone says he is (and his voice is absolutely wonderful), I'd guess he's a frontrunner as well.
Well that was long, yeesh.
Oh duh, and I didn't even mention 110 in the Shade. In short, the race is wide open, IMO.

* John Gallagher, Jr. * Tony lately loves to honor featured performers from shows where it's clear nobody else is going to win...e.g. Dan Folger, Jane Krakowski, Shuler Hensley, Sara Ramirez, Beth Leavel, Anika Noni Rose. And nobody else from Spring Awakening is going to win.
Since Ebersole has actress wrapped up, McMartin need not prepare a speech for June 10. Although, if he wages a campaign based on the fact he's never won, and TWICE lost to John Lithgow (once for Sweet Smell of Success), he might have a shot. Because a lot of people are still scratching their heads on that one. Especially John Cullum.
