The tonys should not be based on past work. If they wanted to honor McMartin's past work, they should give him a lifetime achievement award or something. The fact is, he doesn't do all that much or anything spectacular in Grey Gardens, although he is good in what he does do.
This category is much tougher to call than best actress and featured actress, which in my heart of hearts, I believe belong to the two GG ladies. (Sorry to all you Debra Monk fans and those who say Murphy and McDonald can pull it over Ebersole. Being nominated alongside her this year is the honor. Period.)
That said-McMartin will be nominated. Doubt he's going to win. Or-maybe-the improbable-a tie?! (I personally think Cavenaugh deserves a nod as much as he does. Plays 2 roles perfectly. He's very good as Jerry.)
I really want GG to win all the awards it can, but I'm not sure it will in this category. Danieley and Hibbert are tough to beat, as is Gallagher, who, as was pointed out, is the show's best shot at an acting Tony.
But, I hope I'm proven wrong and Mr. McMartin gets his due. He's very good at making the most out of the time he's on the stage.
What's the title song in THE APPLE TREE?
The "Forbidden Fruit" song is actually called "The Apple Tree", at least according to my itunes, and is reprised in the 2nd act.
is Marc Shaiman eligible for this award?
I was wondering the same thing, LuPonatic.
It would certainly be a hoot if he got a nomination, but I'm more hopeful at the possibility of his getting a nod for Best Score.

Gallagheris obviousley a nomination lock.
I'm still pulling for Kudisch.
Though I'm not in love with the show, I wouldn't object to seeing Gallagher win for Featured Actor. Definitely the (sole, if you ask me) standout of that cast.
I think if someone might pull of a surprise win is Edward Hibbert, though that opinion has diminished a little since last night's reviews.
I personally think that Kudisch certainly deserves a nomination, he made a great impact with just that one song, though the show got such a lukewarm reception that I'm not sure he'll be remembered.
Wouldn't it be great if Danieley won the Tony? It's absurd that there are no Tonys in the Danieley-Mazzie household.
While Gallagher certainly deserves a nomination, he really doesn't deserve to win.
I would count on John McMartin winning, if not John Cullum. To problem with that is, Cullum and McMartin are both veterans - but Cullum already has 2 Tonys. I think people will have difficulty voting for Cullum to give him his 3rd Tony when McMartin doesn't even have 1.

Can someone please tell me what John McMartin does that is so special? It's really not him, because he's very good in a bland and boring role, but there are so many people doing spectacular jobs in this category that it would be a shame for him to win. I'd much rather see Edward Hibbert win, if we can't have John Gallagher Jr.
I have a lot of trouble believing that John Cullum will be nominated, regardless of his past work. He didn't really leave much of an impression in the Grinch. I could sooner see Brooks, Aaron Lazar, or even Jason Tam taking that spot. I think it will be:
Brooks, Lazar, or Tam
Jason Danieley
Edward Hibbert
John Gallagher, Jr.
John McMartin
Also, I don't think John McMartin will win either. As amazing as he is in Grey Gardens, and as much as I love that show and want it to win as many awards as possilbe, I think this year it's going to go to either Hibbert, Gallagher, or Danieley. Sorry theatre vets, I don't think it's your year.

Cullum would not be nominated for the Grinch, he will be in 110.
I'm really skeptical to even give my own breakdown of who I will think could get nominated because I want to see 110 before judging. However, I will go with mostly what everyone else has been saying around here and assume Cullum will be doing some work that is enough to get him a Featured nomination.

I meant Cullum dserved to win for Urinetown, when he lost to John Lithgow and was nominated alongside John McMartin (Into the Woods).
I am not so sure about the Curtains supporting men. The reviews were not so ecstatic, and the most talked about performances were Monk's and Hyde Pierce's. I hope they will receive them though.

In my ideal world, the noms would look like this (of the shows I've seen, that is, which is most)
Jason Tam
Jason Danieley
Matt Cavenaugh
Edward Hibbert
John Gallagher, Jr.
And any of the latter four would win.
I don't hold high hopes for noms for the first three, though.
Are any supporting players in Legally Blonde worth any recognition?

I love the show and the cast but... not really. There just aren't any parts showy enough.
Kudish was wasted in Apple Tree. My vote would be for Matt Cavanaugh if he promises to accept his award naked.
Jonathan B. Wright is fabulous as Hanschen in Spring Awakening. I know that John G. has the larger role as Moritz but IMO acting wise, Hanschen is more challenging. How difficult it must be for an actor of any age to do what Wright is asked to do in that role. Not to mention a 19 year old. Jonathan B. Wright is a major talent, he just landed the smaller role in this particular project. I realize that he will not be nominated, but personally I think he should be.

On buzz alone, I'm guessing either Jonathan Groff or John Gallagher Jr. from Spring Awakening. I am seeing it April 6 so I will be able to personally comment on that later.
I hear Edward Hibbert is fabulous in Curtains, which I will also see.
Jason Tam was excellent in A Chorus Line so I wouldn't be surprise if he got a nom.
Aaron Lazar seems like a possibility too.

True dat. JBW will sadly be over looked but he is so fabulous in his role.
Featured actor is based on acting not singing right? Hands down Jonathan B. Wright
John Gallagher Jr.
I must be retarded. To forget that John Cullum was in 110 in the Shade and to assume that people were talking about him being nominated for the Grinch is absolutely rediculous. So yes, it is a posibility that he will earn a nomination, lol. Wow!
